Opinions on a parts bike I am thinking of purchasing

All,

As with I'm sure most everyone, play money is hard to come by these days. I was browsing through a local paper and found a 86 Vulcan 750 with some carb problems. The bike does run but seems to "choke out" as the guy said. Currently he wants $900 for it but as I said, That would be a big hit for my wallet at this time, especially for a parts bike. I have not looked at it yet but was thinking of what I should offer him for it if it is in great condition/poor condition.

Thanks in advance for your opinions!

A running bike in decent condition would be worth that much IMO. Carb problems can often be solved with a good regiment of seafoam treatments. I'd be more focused on other parts of the bike and their condition. Like the charging system and rust etc. I'd like to see it. But, if it's in ok shape, I'd probably offer a little less and see where he stands.

X2 ^^^^^^ I usually offer 10-20% less than a seller is asking as a starting point. You can always come up a little if you really want it.

When I bought my bike a year ago, I just asked what was the best price he could give me? The seller knocked off $200 just by asking. It`s worth a try.

Thanks.

I went to look at it tonight. Has some good parts but I think the engine is shot as well as the carbs. It would only be good for a parts bike but not at $900. Maybe $300 but he said he has 9 tied up in it already.

It's a fool who thinks he can get all his money back from a bad machine. Walk away from it. Maybe offer $200 in a couple weeks or just keep looking.

That's what I was planning. I really don't think anyone looking for a bike to ride is going to buy it. Not unless he figures out a way to stop the floats from sticking and smoke from pouring out of the exhaust. Not to mention that it would probably cost at least $300-400 to get it road worthy.
