It's wall art. I don't need it. The POR15 they used before peeled back up when the metal split from the extensive rust damage.

It's still amazingly solid, just swiss cheese. I'm a welder and I do sheetmetal sometimes. I've been planning on making a gas tank for one of my VN's and I'm going to use this one for a template for the bottom so I know it'll fit the frame.

I had a similar issue with my VN750. Kawasaki dealership told PO it needed to be sealed and used what I assumed was Kreem. It rusted underneath the coating, causing it to fail. I used several quarts of paint remover to get the sealant out, then used The Works toilet bowl cleaner, which is 18% HCL, to remove the rust. Tank is still nice and shiney 10 years later. I top the tank off after every ride to minimize corrosion, and ethanol gas absorbs what little condensate that may form.

I'm keepin' all the left over parts. I'm gonna use 'em to build another bike!

Too bad it's in such sad shape. As you can weld, it would have made a great candidate for building a higher volume tank with it. Someone awhile back did this by splitting the tank along the sides and adding a strip of metal. Increased capacity to about 5 gallons...

A pictorial review of why POR15 doesnít work and peels back out. I donít know who did this to this tank, but if it were me Iíd use muratic acid, naval jelly, THEN SEALER and cross my fingers. As bad as this tank is inside, I canít imagine they used anything before putting the sealer on.
