Epitome of paranoia

OK, to preclude future problems I've done all the mods to my "new" bike (2003, 27000 miles), upgraded the battery to AGM, changed fluids, etc. No problems.

Now the cam chains are driving me nuts and with me it's a short drive.

I've installed TOC mccts and did the adjustment with the engine hot. No more cam chain noise. However I now hear a soft whirring sound when closing the throttle. Which I assume is the chain sliding over the guides. I seem to have the only 750 in 50 miles so nothing to compare engine sounds with. The bike starts immediately, idles great and throttles quickly. All the vids I've found are about clanking engines, nothing about a "normal" engine. I know this engine is more noisy than most but don't know normal engine noises yet.

So my quandary is this,

Is this slight whirring normal for this engine? Are the mccts too tight? Should I back them off a 1/4 turn? Should I leave them alone?

I've done 'em too tight before, you'll definitely hear that whirring and the bike may want to stall at lights if they're too tight. You can turn 'em back 1/4 a turn until you're happy with the sound (or lack thereof). I don't reckon the whirring is bad unless, like I've done before, you overtighten and stall the bike. The stalling would usually happen while the bike was hot, so the MCCT's can be more subject to engine temp since they don't give way as things expand like the ACCT's do.

In short: Whirring not bad, can turn back 1/4 turn to be safe

I agree, try backing off 1/4 turn and see what you think. You might mark one of the flats on the hex so you can be sure of the adjustment.

These bikes naturally have a bit of a whirring sound to them anyway. But you definitely don't want the MCCTs too tight.

Hey, thanks for getting back to me guys.

Actually the whirring is barely audible. Have to be really close to the engine to hear it.

Still have a little clicking. Stopped adjusting when whirring started. May go a quarter turn tighter to stop chain click. But was worried about the whirr.

Will mark adjusters before I do anymore.

I'm not sure one of these can be dead silent, there's just too much happening in there. Warm it up, then try your adjustment. See if you can make any change in the whirr when you back it off. With the big bolts on the TOCs, you should be able to turn it with your fingers and feel it, just make contact with the guide, and add less than 1/4 turn. The adjuster bolt has fairly coarse threads, right? So 1/4 turn could be a pretty big swing compared to a homemade MCCT with finer threads.

Just tight enough to prevent bad slapping, but you don't want to wear the chain guides.

Mine has a slight tick when cold, and a whirring sound all the time, especially warm. Still has ACCTs.

Actually, if you listen enough, a lot of bikes of many brands make the whirring noise.

A stethoscope on the VN750 will scare the hell out of you.

Hummm

Mine has an audible slap that gets quieter when hot. But still slaps slightly. Not nearly as bad as with the old ACCTs. Can't feel any vibration on adjuster bolt on MCCTs.

IF I do anything it probably will be less than 1/16th turn in to lessen click and stop there. And live with the whirr which probably is not as bad as I imagine.

Last bike was Goldwing Interstate w/Vetter sidecar. Cams were belt driven and the engine made no noises unless something was wrong. So the Vulcan engine and its sounds are new to me. Just gotta get used to it!

Thanks guys!

Started over with adjustments. Did the finger tight till resistance. Adjusted to quietest click possible without bogging. Very quiet now compared to when I first got it. Idles, no stalling, throttles good. I'll get used to the slight whirring. Can't hear it unless you're a foot from the engine anyway.

Now it's fluid changes and regular maintenance for the foreseeable future.

Well, after riding a bit I noticed the "clack" had changed to a "clang". Looking at the upper chain guides there are rebound springs(I guess). Pulled and checked again. Very weak. Put two small washers behind each of the springs, clang was gone. readjusted MCCTs just tight enough to not feel any slap against the bolt adjuster.

Bike is reasonably quiet now.

2 wire mod, blue wire mod with waterproof switch, volt meter and I'm done! (or am I... hummm) :~)

Go ahead and check that rear spline if you haven't. Some of the early 2000's bikes didn't get any lube from the factory it seems. Better safe than sorry

Yeah, did the spline lube the first week along with fresh 90w. Bike is a sidecar tug and the splines get inspected/serviced every 3000 miles. I was lucky either the factory did lube them or the dealer/PO did. Minimal wear, no rust!

So far I've done all the reliability mods except for taking the RLU out of play, led headlight and the yellow wire mod.

And I've got to ez-out one screw on the brake reservoir. PO must have been Godzilla about tightening bolts and screws.
