Wiring Harness

So I am in the process of replacing the wiring harness in my 86 VN750. I took out the old one and bought a used one from eBay. I went to hook up the "new" one and noticed the connections were different. There was no connector on the "new" harness for the turn signal blinking device...and then 2 connectors near the front of the bike were also different. The eBay listing said it was for 89-06 vulcans...but i was under the impression that it should work for an '86 as well....

86 had the turn signal canceling device on it.. 89 will work but you have to do some adjustments... Slim will jump in here in a bit.. he is deploying right now so give him a bit.. he has reworked his whole elct. system.

The `85 to `88 vn750 had the self cancelling signals.
That`s why the ebay listing for the wiring harness was listed as fitting `89 to 2006.

There were not many changes in the 750 over 21 years of production, but there were a few.

in short, there are a few different wiring harnesses.. in my case, I was working on my 92 wiring harness and replaced it with another 92, and it was a whole lot different. I found out that there is even a difference between Canada, California< standard US, U.K, and Japanese 750's of the same year... so make sure you order a wiring harness for your exact model of bike...

Thank you for the responses....I called the seller and he is researching to make sure he has one that will fit an '86 and might let me exchange it for no cost. My next question would be since it only effects the turn signal operation that means the starter should still kick over, but I push the starter button and nothing happens....is it becuase the circuit is not completed somewhere or is my starter shot.....

Could you start the bike with the old wiring harness?
Is the engine stop switch in the run position?

Then there are 3 safety switches;
-1 operated by the clutch lever
-sidestand
-and a neutral detector

If the sidestand is down, the safety switch won`t let it start with the tranny in gear.
Putting the stand down with the bike in gear and clutch pulled in will kill the engine too.

Sidestand safety switch sometime gets sticky/dirty. Put bike up on centerstand and inspect switch, spray with WD-40 and work contact lever around to clean it out and free it up.

Neutral safety switch won`t let it crank unless the tranny is in neutral,
or the clutch must be pulled in if the tranny is in gear.

Try again with sidestand up (with clean operating switch), clutch in, tranny in neutral and engine stop switch in RUN position.

No the old harness was totally shot. It is in neautral and on the center stand I hit the button and nothing happens. Took off the starter and used a different cable from the relay switch to starter to see if it was bad and the starter did not move. So i am assuming I need a new starter.

Did you have a ground cable to the starter body while on the bench?
I only ask because of a similar *oops* incident here a few days ago. lol

Try using booster cables from the car battery to double check the starter.
There are starter rebuild kits on ebay for under $30.

Here is a current link to vn750 starters and related parts on ebay

Thanks...I actually did not have it grounded so I will have to give it a try. If it does not work and I still need to rebuild it is it fairly simple to do?
