Oil/Coolant leak

Hey Yall,

I'm a new rider (started this year) though I've done a bike rebuild (a 93 GSXR 750 with a seized engine, now sold) and I've put in a lot of work on my 83 maxim 750 which is my current ride.

I'm hoping to upgrade my ride to something a little more comfortable so I've bought myself a 86 Vulcan 750 (~36,000km) as a fixer-upper project for this winter.

It is a project bike as the head is leaking oil from around the forward cylinder head gasket area and anti-freeze is getting into the oil. I expect that I'll have to replace the head gasket though I guess with these things it could be a cracked head or a faulty o-ring somewhere.

Right now I am looking for a complete gasket set as I would like to be able to replace as many gaskets and o-rings as possible while I'm in there. However I am having a very hard time finding a set so if anyone has any tips for where to look that would be great.

Also I would greatly appreciate hearing about other things I should check out while I'm in there as I don't really feel like doing the job twice.

Cheers

Andre Bezanson

unfortunatly there is not a complete gasket oring kit ... I'll peak through my paperwork and see if i can find a parts list for you... your best bet is cheap cycle parts.com however where are u located u said km so im guessin not in the states... lol n e who i'll see what i can find , but a mungest the list of stuff u need is a mechanical seal, and id also re ring and change the dampeners while your in ln there ...

that mechanical seal and the gasket on the clutch side cover are the number one culpret for water in the oil ...

Amazing

Thanks for the list Seebeeare! That will be a huge help. I guess while I'm in there I should probably lap the valves and upgrade the ACCT springs though I definitly have some research to do before I get started as I have a lot to learn about these bikes. The whole damper system and hydraulically adjusting valves are completly new to me so I'm definitly not going to rush into this one.

I'm located in Nova Scotia and it looks like my best bet is to go with cheap cycle parts as those are the best prices I've seen yet.

I'll probably try to take the time this coming weekend to run a compression test on the engine and possibly rip her down to see if she's running std ring. After that I hope to order up the parts and get er done.

Once again thanks,

Andre

You also need to replace the tie rod assembly in the shifter mechanism with part 39110. The original rod in your bike is weak (design flaw) and will fail. The newer one was made for later models and is much stronger. Info courtesy of lance.

Maybe not. They are not that different if you know the basics. The posts above are right. These guys are very helpful as you have seen. You can get viton valve seals from ebay.

Cheapcycleparts is good. They are a little slower to ship though.

I have to say the VN750 is the most comfortable M/C I have ever ridden.

CONTACT THIS PERSON FOR THE SEALS, HIS AUCTIONS JUST ENDED FOR THE VN750. HE HAS PLENTY IN STOCK AND WILL RELIST SOON.

If you do not need to split the case halves you will NOT need any special tools.

If you re-ring you WILL have to de-glaze the cylinder walls. If you don't the ring will NOT seat properly.

DO NOT use any RTV Silicone sealant, use Permatex High Tack Spray Gasket sealant on the paper gaskets and Permatex Ultra Copper Spray Gasket sealant on the head gasket.

NO WARRANTY EXPRESSED OR IMPLIED!!!!!!!!!!! LOL :beerchug:

I would add checking the R/R and stator just to be safe. Also you may want to clean and check the splines on the drive shaft. Anything else, I encourage you to check the Vulcan Verses.

Those lists are amazing, I really can't wait until next weekend to rip her apart and figure out just what sort of condition the engine is in. I'm also going to drain the tank and carbs so that things won't get foul up this winter (I guess I should also pull the battery and give it a good charge as it has been going down to a little below freezing the past couple of nights).

So here's my list for this coming weekend:
-Run a compression test
-Inspect brake pads/shoe/lines
-Tear down the engine and inspect (or if the compression test was bad check the cylinder wall and ring condition/measurements)
-Order parts

Thanks for the advice and I know I'll be posting lots more questions in the near future.
