Notes from Lance (lostiguy) on re-keying locks:
I was able to "rekey" my new Kaw toolbox
lock on my own. It's really easy. I'm passing on the link to the
page someone else had once passed on to me:
http://home.howstuffworks.com/lock-picking2.htm
I took the tumbler and pins out, rearranged the pins in the
order that suited my ignition key the best I could, using
all but one pin. So I left that pin out of the new arrangement.
Works fine. In 15 min, I was done, ...and now using my
original Kaw key.
In "Files > Body work > LOCKS > Pins", there is one jpg I drew up
(must faster this way for me right now), which shows how each pin in
the
gas tank lock tumbler is kept in it's place. "IF" you attempt
this removal, please remember to use only the *NECESSARY FORCE* to
draw each pin
out in the CORRECT DIRECTION. You may screw up and damage the light
metal brass pin, or lose it's spring, or render some damage to the
tumbler body if you are careless. However, it can be easily done,
depending on your willingness and patience, BUT the more times you
pop the pin in or out to test your new rekey,
the more chances you MAY damage or ground down the small brass nubs
shown in my jpeg. As a note, I have been able to reinstall the same
pin in it's slot a little more than three times still. Worse come to
worse if you can't install any of the 3 pins back in tumbler, I *believe*
you will be able to reinstall everything back in to the gas tank flap
and then use ANY KAWI KEY to open the lock, becuz, I *believe* the
flap's 5 lid springs are strong enough to still do their job by
keeping the flap lid tang tight with the gas tank body. "HOWEVER
THIS IS ONLY MY UNTESTED THEORY"!
GOOD LUCK to you all.
