Engine / Exhaust / Cooling

From the radiator, through the case and out the exhaust. If it has to do with the cooling, engine or exhaust, discuss it here! |

ouch ! Somthing(I'm guessing the cam chain) let go today on the way home Luckily I was in a position to easily and safely coast to a parking lot. So now I am left with the question of what to do now; cage, new bike, or engine swap.
I know most things can be swapped from any year, can I use an engine from any year?

Yes, you can use an engine from any year, from '85 to '06. Hopefully when the cam chain broke or jumped teeth, it didn't do a lot of serious damage. On some engines it doesn't, on others, the valves and pistons collide, resulting in bent valves, broken pistons, bent rods, in other words a really big mess. I don't know if the Vulcan engine is one of these or not. If you really like the Vulcan 750 (many people here are fanatics, but many also just wound up with one by accident, and would just as soon have some other bike), then I would look for another engine, or a good used Vulcan 750. If you are not that attached to the Vulcan 750, then another bike might be a good idea, If you go that route, try to avoid ones with tube type tires. They will leave you stranded when you have a flat. Obviously a car is not a substitute for a motorcycle, but these days, a used car is usually cheaper, at least to buy. I'm assuming you have no other source of transportation? While I have always owned at least one motorcycle, I have never been without a car or truck either. Jerry.
