Another sucessful spline lube .
Aloha Everyone ,
Over the weekend I lubed the spline on my 2004 ( 15k ) . The pictures on the site helped . I had zero problems . I had one extra washer left over but I think it was from the license plate bolt . I changed the gear oil also . When I got inside it was dry . There was a thin coat of something black , like oil sludge on the spline teeth itself . I used an old toothbrush to clean it before lubing .
I ordered the EBC kevlar clutch kit with heavy duty springs like Flitecontrol was telling me had . I already have a new gasket in case the old one gets trashed .

That was Knifemaker. Haven't been into the Vulcan clutch yet. Glad you got her lubed with no problems.

Hope the splines were in good condition at 15k. The spline lube is easy, just annoying. I do mine more often than most people consider necessary, mostly just because of my "better safe than sorry" way of thinking.
I'm assuming you are doing the clutch to try and get rid of the "coffee grinder" thing. Hope it works. I just warm mine up. I put over 80,000 mostly highway miles on the clutch on my '93, and it still worked fine, and still did the "coffee grinder" thing when cold. Jerry.

I was a little confused there Flitecontrol , you were right it was Knifemaker that talked about the Kevlar EBC clutch kit . You see I am new to the site and I stayed up late reading the " Verses " . I fell asleep and dreamed of Kevlar vs. Non-Kevlar clutches bathed in synthetic oil complaining they favored non-synthetic oil . I will try to get to bed a little earlier !
The splines looked almost new . I think the previous owner took it easy , I tend to have a flexible right wrist and some things already vibrated off . ( swing arm cap, sissy bar compartment lock )

seams like you lost the two most common things to fall off due to vibrations.

"some things already vibrated off . ( swing arm cap, sissy bar compartment lock )" Those fell off on my first Vulcan too, along with the tool box door. I replaced them, glued the swing arm caps on with Permatex #2, put Loc-Tite on the threads of the tool box lock, and never use it, to prevent the door from breaking off. Jerry.

A light bead of silicone (I use clear) on the caps and lock will keep it from vibrating off but still allow it to be removed if you need to.

I doubt that I will ever need to remove mine, but if I do, I will probably have to break them to get them off. The only reason I would ever remove them would be to replace worn out swing arm bearings, and highway mileage doesn't cause them to wear very fast. But yeah, if you ever do plan on removing them, I would not use Permatex. Jerry.

I'm trying to remember what the Forum advised on frequency of spline lube. Lubed my 02 at 7000 and am approaching 13000 miles. Advise/ comments please.

Folks here generally say every 10,000 miles or when you replace the rear tire. My Clymer manual says every 7,500 miles.
