Hey there pgc, how are you? Have you checked or lubed the cable? If it is not frayed anywhere, it may just need a little lube. (when all else fails, read the manual <BG>) One caution here, according to Clymer, there are aftermarket cables available that have a nylon lining in the sheath. These are not lubed, but are used dry as oil or grease will cause them to swell and pinch against the cable. Be sure what you have.
My Clymer manual has directions to lube, adjust and change the clutch cable and I`m sure your Haynes manual should too. I haven`t had to do anything with mine yet, but the procedure seems straight forward. You may have to hunt around in the manual in a couple of chapters to find all the directions. Mine is split between chpt.3 (lubrication, maintenance and tune-up) and chpt.5 (clutch).
To remove it you need to find the adjuster in the middle of the cable and the one up at the handlebar lever, loosen the locknut at each and turn the adjuster to give maximum slack and remove the cable at each end. The locknut at the top has a slot that must be properly lined up to release the cable.
Route the new cable alongside the old and hook up each end, remove the old cable, and follow the directions for cable adjustment given in the manual to complete the installation. If you still have questions after reading your manual, come back and ask.

I just changed mine this way-started removal at the trans and went back towards the lever, then reinstalled from the lever down to the trans.
Any repair manual (live book or online version) will have a step-by-step in it if you need it.
