What is the best oil filter for the 750 other than the oem?

Ask this question to 10 people and you are likely to get 10 answers. I use Mobil 1 exclusively in my car. I 'm not nearly as picky about my bike (I know, I know...). Anyway, there are a few brands that will do an excellent job and there are a bunch that will do a sufficient job. There are some that will probably do very little for you.

Read through the previous filter posts in the "oil" section and you will see a bunch of suggestions.

Thanks Bishop. I have read that site and I bought the purolator pl14612. Thanks for your imput. All I wanted was some experience from some of you guys.

Purolators are very good. They are not made by Champion Labs. Most of us don't use 'em because they're very hard to find. For our Vulcan the best bang for the buck has to be the SuperTech ST6607 sold at Walmart, it's made by Champion Labs. All the filters listed in Dianna's post are good with the exception of the Fram, which I have cut open - JUNK!

Given that this is such an old post, there may be new info. I was just reading the Purolator website, and they discourage using their "PureONE" line for motorcycles. I think that the 14612 and 14610 are both PureONE filters. Here is a direct quote...

Whoa! That's news to me! I've always used the PureONE!!! (I bought them on sale through Amazon.)

I sent an e-mail to person who has done a bunch of research on oil filters and cross references and stuff and he surmised, That's their lawyers talking. Their ML line is rebranded crap made in china, that's gives you and idea how much they care about your engine.

Thanks Doug, for reminding us all of the wealth of information contained in the Verses. I plan on picking up a few of the Walmart ST7317's if they still carry them. If not, I'll look for the ST6607's.

(I was at a Harley Dealer the other day behind a guy in line who was buying all HD oil and filters; I laughed out loud when they gave him the total, $55 and some change, cause he HAD to have the **** that said HD on the package, LOL)

I started to use wix, they are in the 5$ range. It just gives me a better sence of security. And I am going to run the oil longer about 3 to 4 thousand miles.

Filter wrench. We don't need no steenking filter wrench.

Use your hand. It doesn't need to be that tight that you need a wrench. If it is on there that tight already, shove a screwdriver through it and pry it off.

If you want the best filter protection, DON"T use Fram. If you dont care about your engine then use fram. :doh: For the past several years Fram filters are Chineese crap!!

Although I am not really convinced anything is wrong with Fram filters, I still avoid them.

The original reported issue was pointed out in an article about filters a seveal years back. The author had taken apart a bunch of filters from different makers and reported his findings. He was a bit concerned that Fram used a "cardboard" back to their filter element instead of a metal one like all the others he tore open. From this he deduced that the Fram one was inferior, because metal is "better" than paper. Keep in mind the author was not an expert of anykind, and that a letter to Fram about the issue garnered a response that more or less said that they have NEVER had any problems using paper backs, even with extensive testing.

A letter from a reader pointed out that the glue used to hold the filter to the back would in all likelyhood stick better to paper than a non porous metal..as you would be gluing paper to paper and not paper to metal.


Then add to the list a non comfirmed "story" that someone knew someone who knew someone that used a Fram filter and ended up with tiny pieces of cardboard in their oil. Likely just a urban legend made up from hearing the first report.

All this while millions of customers use Fram filters and still no written reports of filters falling apart.

But still those that read that authors piece or just heard about it , got it in their minds that Fram filters were bad, and should not ever be used. You can count me as one of them, although now today I realize that the "scare" was likely unwarrented and that Fram filters are not as bad as made out to be.

That said, the fact that I can buy a Supertech filter for less than 3 bucks and as I change my oil frequently, I see no need to be a "tester" for the Fram filters.

My general feeling here is many folks get a bit to anal about the whole filter and oil thing , and that the best filter you can use is the one you change the most often.

I'm not sure of course about how well one filter actualy "filters" compared to the next, but a consumer report piece on oil filters said they could not find any difference in filtering between a cheap filter and a high priced one. Both seemed to filter the same "size" out of the oil and they were hard pressed to understand why one would pay more for the premium filter when it did the exact same job the cheap one did.
And the hunderd dollar stainless steel filter was the worst.

So, I'm staying with Supertech.
