Hi

I took the shift lever off the bike yestrday to de-gunk the rear of it and surrounding areas.

First off i carefully scribed the end of the shaft and the lever itself, undid the 10mm nut and opened the gap on the lever

The lever came off like a charm, no twisting, hammering, perfect.

However i cleaned up, then put the lever back on in exactly the same position according to the markings and on starting up the bike in neutral, I can engage 1st gear but when i take the lever up it will not engage into 2nd or above.

The lever just will not lock into the 2nd gear position after passing through neutral from 1st. There has been NO force excerted at any time during the re-assembly and NO play in the shaft.

I have re-aligned the shaft/lever several times now but still no luck

Any suggestions please would be welcome

Not sure why this would be, but once you've got the lever back on, try adjusting your clutch cable...let me think, it sounds like it's too tight, so put a little bit of length back in it (turn the adjusting barrel "in" so that there's fewer threads showing). Don't turn it much, just a little at a time - see if that helps.

Our bikes have a positive neutral finder which will not allow you to shift past neutral when the bike is not moving. First and neutral is all you can get to at a stand still.
The Gospel according to MOM:
The transmission is equipped with a positive neutral finder. When the motorcycle is standing still, the transmission cannot be shifted past neutral from 1st gear. To use the positive neutral finder, shift down to 1st gear, then lift up on the shift pedal while standing still. The transmission will shift only into neutral

Darn it, I keep forgetting that, Dianna! Even after your previous post indicating how that pos neutral finder works!

pgchimp, ignore me - Dianna's right (assuming you were trying to shift in your driveway and not along the roadway).

I take it you didn't try shifting up before you took the shift lever off??

Well, atleast now you know your P.N.F. is working, atleast like Dianna & Cindy said, you were sitting still when trying to shift up.
