Please try adding this to the calendar yourself. I need to see if users are able to do this.

Thank you

Just a thought, but the Ky Lake Rally might need it's on sub-forum. Place to post info, questions, etc?

Added the Kentucky Lake Gathering on the Calendar (And I'm just a regular member *S*)
Not sure about it's one sub-forum though, but guess we could delete the sub-forum once it is past.

We could do that, or we can try to make it a sticky thread at the top of the general fourm. I think it would be better to try to do that to start with, since it can be a problem on how many fourms we add, i.e. where would we stop - LOL

So I'll start a sticky tread to start with, and lets see what happens with that.

Here is the Kentuky Lake Ralley information:

-------- Original Message -------- Subject: [VN750] Kentucky Lake Rally InfoDate: Thu, 10 Jun 2004 22:34:50 -0500From: Jim Foster <jimf@insightbb.com>Reply-To: VN750@yahoogroups.comTo: VN750@yahoogroups.com

There has been some renewed interest in the Ky Lake Rally the last few days, so I'm reposting this for those who may have missed it.

PLEASE COME!!!

********************************
OK guys and gals, the 2nd annual Kentucky Lake VN750 Rally is less than 3 months away, August 26-29, 2004 at Shawnee Bay Resort. Time to get crackin'. We always talk about what a great group of people we have here -- This is your chance to meet a bunch of them!! Jax is making his world-famous ribs, Dianna is making some great side dishes (I even heard something about chocolate gravy?). We have a whole bunch of people in the poll who say they are coming. At least 22, with a bunch of "maybe's" as well. Those of you (7) who said they would need their own cabin -- it's time to call and make the reservation! Check out the web site: www.shawneebayresort.com (http://www.shawneebayresort.com) . Use the 800-number -- 1-800-272-4413. Talk to John Rezek (Resort Manager) and mention that you're coming for the Motorcycle Rally and Jim Foster told you to call. If you absolutely cannot make it, please go back to the poll and change your vote, and I promise I won't hound you about it. For anyone who would like to camp, there is a nice campground 3 miles from the resort -- www.beespringlodge.com (http://www.beespringlodge.com) .

If you're staying in a cabin, they have everything you'll need except food and personal items. Linens, pots/pans, dishes, silverware, etc. are all provided. Cabins are air conditioned and include all the normal amenities, including cable TV and a VCR. If you want to share a cabin with somebody, take a look at the poll and see who is going. Send some e-mails and agree on a group. Then one of you call and make the reservation. Most cabins will hold 6 people. (Last year we got the cabins for $99 a night -- split 6 ways, that's a good deal! Of course, they could be slightly more this year.) (NOTE: I have since found out that prices are indeed higher this year: Basically, $90/day for two people and $17 for each additional person, but it also depends on the number of beds in the cabin. So if you're in a 4-bed cabin, that would be $90 + $34, or $124. Prices do not include tax, which is something like 10%.)

If you have any questions about the place or the accommodations, check their web site or feel free to e-mail me (jimf@insightbb.com). My family has been vacationing at this place for 35 years, so we know the resort, the Lake, and the owners pretty well. (Yes, I was a VERY young lad when we started going there <g>).

If you've got a SO or other buddy who rides something else, they are welcome, too. Also, if anyone from the northern Midwest would like to get together, I would sure like a riding partner on the way down there. Let's make this an event to remember! PLEEEEASE come and join us!! JUST DO IT!!!!

OK, here's what I know so far:

The following are confirmed (last I heard, anyway):

Cabin 2 : Allen Mehringer & Family (Fort Knox, KY)
Cabin 4: Knifemaker (Fenton, MO)
Cabin 5: Uncle Gomer (Pilot Mt, NC), MokiMan (Dallas, GA), and Keith Coon (Lexington, KY)
Cabin 6: Pick (Dixon, IL), Hugheys (Conway AR) , Rick Bates (Gary, IN), grambo (Honduras, but back "home" in TN for business)

Also, coming for one night only (Sat.): Woo Hoo (Keller, TX - on return trip from Flemdog), Jax (Kingston, TN), Joe Scheuring (Taylorsville, KY). They will need a couch or porch or something to crash on for Sat. night. We will fit them in somewhere - doesn't matter where; we're all good friends. All the cabins have a pullout couch and a screened portch.

There has been a lot of discussion about the Rally and routes to get there the last few days, and that is great! We have a whole bunch of "maybes" listed in the poll - I sure hope a lot of them turn into "YES!" very soon. As far as I know,. most of the other cabins are still available. As soon as you decide (or convince your spouse - Rita!) that you're going, make your own arrangements with someone else who is going and share a cabin -- it's much cheaper that way. Send some emails (they're listed in the poll) or post on the board to find some cabin mates (it took Vince about 2 minutes to fill his cabin after he posted!). Check the cabin layouts at www.shawneebayresort.com (http://www.shawneebayresort.com). As a special deal, we have been given the "Early Spring and Fall" rates. Prices are basically $90 for two beds, plus $17 for each additional bed. So a 3-bed cabin would be $107 and a 4-bed cabin would be $124 (plus tax, or course). Except a few of the larger cabins, which are priced separately (check the web site). You can do the math to figure your share depending on how many people you can get to share the cabin with you. (NOTE: There are no bad cabins - they are all close, and you can walk from any cabin to any other in less than two minutes.)

As we get closer to the dates, I will try to keep you posted on which cabins are available. There are no guarantees, however. If anyone just "shows up" we will do our best to find a flat spot for them to lay down, but in that case you'd better bring your own bedding! It would be MUCH better to have a reserved spot in a cabin that you are sharing with some other fine VN750 riders (or Goldwing or VN1600 riders). When you're ready to reserve a cabin, call the resort at 1-800-272-4413 and talk to John Rezek (resort manager) and tell him you're coming for the motorcycle rally in August, and Jim Foster told you to call. You will get the Fall rates then.

Thanks everyone, and I hope to see A LOT of you there!

Since I last posted on the Yahoo forum Ky Lk may not be in my future after all. I mentioned to my wife the plans for Douglasville and my bike. Well she is not to pleased over these events. Does even want me taking the bike to Douglasville. "It would take away from our time together and be too dangerous in the Atlanta area." I'm not giving up. Will have to 'work' on her some more. But she is not to keen on me taking off a few days to ride to Ky Lk. :(

Phil, as far as riding goes, the route we take to get to I-75N for the ride to KyL avoids Atlanta traffic. I ride in this area a LOT and I make it a point to try to avoid traffic as much as possible. Hope things work out for you but we will all understand if you can't make it. Been there, done that. :-)

Thanks to all for the words of encouragement on Ky Lk. The 24th of August is my 30th wedding anniversary. My wife is looking at this time in Douglasville as a mini-vacation cheap getaway since we will be house sitting for her brother and watching their pets. Of course I want to sneak off for a couple of three days to Shawnee Resorts. My wife won't/can't go because of the pets. And if I go I'll be considered the embodiment of Scrouge and Jack the Ripper combined. Looks like I'll have to pass this year, but gosh I want (there I go again - I want, I want) to ride with you folks and meet others at Ky Lk. Reckon it just ain't gonna happen this year.
And in October there is ES (not in my future either), BiketoberFest and the Fall Festival for Marriage I mentioned in other posts on the Yahoo forum.
Toss Pick in the Lake for me. :)

We'll take a ride on Friday, and another ride on Saturday. We have MokiMan doing a spline lube clinic (don't know when, but I'm first in line!), and Saturday night will be the big food bash with Jax's World-famous BBQ ribs, Allen's potato salad, and some items from Dianna's Delectable Diner. That's about all the plan we have. Lots of looking at bikes and discussing mods and swapping lies and ride stories and taking pictures. Some swimming and lying in the sun. A little frisbee, maybe. But mainly it's about meeting all the wonderful people we've come to know and love electronically.

If you haven't made your plans yet, time is growing short. DO IT!

If enough people are interested, I was thinking we might try having a local sympathy rally here in the Pacific Northwest for those that riding or other travel means are out of the question for Kentucky Lake. As much as I would like to join you guys, a 5300 mile round trip is out of the question for me right now.

Get together on a Saturday and do a ride share a meal and maybe arrange for a cell phone to cell phone call form those here to those there to vicariously share in the fun.

Any takers from Washington, Oregon, or Idaho (or other parts nearby)?

Well at least two cabins have opening, I think. Rita and the Drifters I think may have something. Loran Yourk just reserved a cabn and posted that he has a bedroom or a couch available. I think split 3 ways the cabins wind up being about $35 a night give or take. I want to say ours was about $32 plus $16 per person extra. Go to www.shawneebayresort.com (http://www.shawneebayresort.com) ad check the rates (we're getting Fall rates).

If you want your own cabin (about 90-120 per night) you probably better reserve pretty soon. Otherwise just contact Rita or Loran.

A bunch of us are meeting NW of Atlanta on that Thursday and riding up in a 'posse'. Hope we can hook up with you in TN and ride the last leg.

For those just tuning in...

I am going to have some Kentucky Lake patches made for those who want one. The patch will say "VN700/750 The Gathering" and will have at least an outline of our bike on it. They will be round and will be generally green and blue with a red border. They will not say "Kentucky Lake" or the year but we will have rockers available that go underneath the patch to denote each year and whatever location it is held at (for instance, this year's rocker will say "Kentucky Lake 2004").

The cost will be somewhere around 5 or 6 bucks for the patch and about $3 for the rocker. We are selling them at cost. But since I am fronting the dough for this I don't want to over-order -- nor leave anyone out. So please let me know if you think you will want one of these patches or rockers. No commitment until you actually fork over cash, but I need an idea of the number.

To keep from cluttering up this forum, suggest you e-mail or private message me. TIA

I am sorry if I seem cheap or anything by this but....

I really, REALLY want to come to KY lake, but I need to keep lodging cost to a minimum. So what I was thinking was about splitting the cost of a cabin with the most amount of people in it that wouldn't mind me putting a sleeping bag and/or air mattress on the floor.

I have talked a little with Rita before her trip, but not since...so Rita if you are going to have several people all 3 nights and think the split wouldn't be that much let me know...or if anyone else can help please let me know.

Thank you so much...everyone on here is very nice and helpful and I am glad to be associated with y'all.

That is super news, Stargazer. Hey, never underestimate the power of a well conceived whining campaign. :-)

I am hopefully being accompanied from Savannah to KL, by my son-in-law to be on his new '04 Harley Heritage. I say hopefully, because Chuck has jury duty that week, but he is probably doing some whining of his own today, seeking to be excused so that he can make the trip. We'll be in cabin # 6 from Thursday through Sunday morning. His name is Chuck Rawlinson, a heck of a nice guy. He is looking forward to meeting everyone, as am I.

In addition to Chuck, as Phil said mentioned he will be with us in cabin 6 on Thursday night. Then on Saturday we will be joined by Doug Simmons, his wife and Joe Scheuring.

I'm really looking forward to the trip. Uncle Gomer and several others in our group from NC, FL, and GA are busily making route revisions. We should have an impressive caravan of, I believe, nine riders on the road to KY.

Can't wait...

am going to meet Mokiman and ride on up, meet the rest of the gang
and proceed to KyLk. Plan on sharing space with Ratty. I will only
be staying the night Thursday and returning Friday, but what the
hey. I'll at least have an opportunity to meet folks I have only
seen pixs of or shared the 'net with.
See ya on the 26th! Wahoo! Let's ride!

Hey Beavis & Fallguy...

Are y'all coming up Thursday or Friday? If Thursday, any chance you can fall in with our 'posse' for the last however many miles?

We are coming on Thursday. But aren't y'all going to be going up I-24 from Nashville? If so we can actually make it to the lake quicker from here than it would take to get to Nashville? I would like to ride in with a large group, just trying not to go further out of the way than the whole trip would be otherwise. Let me know your route though.

We're pondering getting off the interstate for part(s) of the ride. One option is to jog left at/near Nashville and maybe meet you guys somewhere (Camden?) and ride up US641 with you (I presume that's you're route?). You're in Parsons, right? Where is Beavis?

Fallguy

Yep...I'm in Parsons...and would be going right through Camden. Beavis is in McLemoresville. He and I were going to meet up in Paris, but I am about 99% sure he would come to Camden to meet up with everyone if y'all chose that option. Just let us know.

Camden was just a suggestion. The general idea is we would abandon I-24, meet you guys somewhere. and ride non-interstate the last stretch. How is US641? For that matter, coming out of Nashville, how is US70? Might be better to go ahead and just take I-40 until we get in you rneck of the woods. You could tell us a good place to pick you up, then we could ride with you to Paris (or Camden or whereever) and pick up Beavis. That would give us a dozen bikes (all but two Vulcan 750 or 700's!) riding the last hour or so! I think that would be awesome!

US641 and US70 are both good highways. Have you looked at US64 out of Chattanooga? Let me look at my map here in a little while and run a few others by you. If you wanted to turn north sooner than before you got here, I can come east some to do that. Your right, with all of us that last hour would be awesome!!

We're trying to balance desire to get there as early as possible, vs desire to get off the slab and enjoy the ride. I personally woouldn't mind getting off 24 before Nashville, but don't know that we want to get off that far south and add that long to the ride. Have you got a good place to turn west below Nashpatch to head over your way?

I'm deffinatly game for riding up with the "possie" . that would be fun, but if it put you guys out too long, I understand......
any thoughts about riding up through LBL? I know friday we are riding back down through there, but just a passing thought?
P.S. if we go out of the way to meet them, Steve, just remember fas as my wife is concerned,.....it was just the best way to get there......lol...there were no shorter options, lol......
good scenic route......

Looking at the map it is hard to think of a GREAT place to head west, but look at this and see what you think. You could take I-840 off I-24...heading toward Columbia by either coming a little ways down I-65 or the Hwy by Springhill (sorry left my map down in my room {I'm at work}) Where I am trying to get you to is US412 that would bring you straight into Parsons and could turn north on US641 out of Parsons. Not trying to lead y'all to my front door, but US412 is going to be about the best east/west route before you get to Nashville.

beavisIt is, but wouldn't that kinda take away from Fri? But hell...it is all good to me might catch things a second time through didn't see the first. If we did go through LBL up would probably need to turn north around TN13, think?

UncleGomer

Well my MS S&T must be out of date cuz it doesn't show 840 west of 24 yet. If we could get all the way over to 65 at interstate speed that might be a option but I think that may be a bit much off-slab and get us there kinda late.

If we came 24 to 40 then west, we'd need to gas up around Hwy 13 between Lobelville and Hurricane Mills (exit #143). Could you meet us there? We could actually make it to US641 exit but my program doesn't show a gas station there...surely there is one? That might be a better place to stop, gas up and meet with you.

As for LBL I suspect we'd all just as soon wait until Friday and just head on up US641 into Hardin and over to SBR. This would only add 60 miles to our route and would still get us there about 5-ish (with a little over 8 hours in the saddle!)

We'd be getting to your neck of the woods about 2:30. I didn't know if you wanted to go on up earlier Thursday (help Dianna short sheet our beds or anything).

To Beavis: We can either meet you in Paris as planned or wherever along 641 you want to meet with us.

Fallguy

Not sure how old your stuff is, but 840 is fairly new. It would take you at interstate speed from 24 to 65 but 412 from there would be much slower.

Coming on down 40 sounds good. I could meet you at exit 143, but Yes there are several gas stations and two truck stops at the US641 exit, exit number 126. So either is good for me. Should be able to make it the rest of the way from either place.

Hadn't planned on going up too much earlier than that, so 2:30 or so is good for me.

I have been getting excited that it was getting so close to time...but the idea of arriving as part of such a group is really getting me going... :)

I-840 south of Nashville between I24 and I65 goes right by my sister's place in Peytonville. In fact I-840 goes thru their farm. Or that is their son-in-laws. I have driven 840 in a car but not a bike. It is a nice rode. I'm perusing maps to plan my return trip to Douglasville. I am actually thinking of a rather circuitous route. Might ride the Natchez Trace to Alabama and then over to Douglasville. What is LBL?

sure, me and wifey can deffinatly meet you guys in paris, in fact that may work to my advantage waiting on yall, as I can leave out early enough, to test that my gear aint gonna fall off or anything, lol, and grab a bite in the mexican resturaunt there while we are waiting..........unless you guys want eat there too, then that is also an option.... no need in me getting there th KY lake way before the rest anyways......
just keep me posted on when you will be coming through......if Steve phones me when you guys are almost to him....I can be in paris about 5-10 minutes longer than it takes to get from cmden to paris.
Beavis
We could meet at walmart in paris if sounds good(easy to find, and on route to 641 to murray)
P.S. I do hope this works out, I'd much rather be riding up with a larger group (help reasons, and not getting lost reasons) than just a couple of us that have not been there before.....not that I doubt in any way Steves map reading abilities, but all in all, it would just be more fun and relaxing traveling with friends....right?

Damn, it's day 1 after Kentucky Lake, and already I can't wait until next Year!!!

I hope I can make it next year, my daughter is going to be headed off to college at that time. I hope to ride down and back next year and I am going to be saving a week of vacation to be able to do just that.

I hope more of those that could not make it this year can plan and make next year, and that all that came this year can make it again. It was, in simple words, a blast. Like one big family reunion, only better. It really did seem to me that I had known everyone for a long time. Lots to do, lots to talk about.

Super time.

Thanks To Dianna, Pick, Vince and all the others that helped this come together this year!!!!

Kentucky Lake 2004 – Loose Cannon’s version

Thursday, August 26
Day 1

I had packed all of my things the night before. Still, in my preparedness a little bit of impatience seeped in and I forgot to pack some of the other items I had planned to bring. Having made several trips this year, the majority of my trip checklist tends to remain packed and ready to go (some is actually on the bike at all times now). I took little more than 10 minutes to load the bike down with my SuperT bag, the accompanying roll bag (which makes a fine backrest), and the tank bag.
I rolled out around 7:50 in the morning, headed to Calhoun to meet our posse. I knew that I had rolled out just a tad too late, but I still took my time and made it there safely. I fueled up before going into the IHOP parking lot. Ten minutes late, I was the last one there (and the guy who lives the closest, what a shame). We made quick introductions and went inside for a good IHOP breakfast and plenty of BS. I was actually surprised, but we spent very little conversation about the trip or our bikes. We took the time getting to know each other in casual dialog on a variety of topics.
After breakfast we hauled our full bellies out to the bikes. Phil was parked beside me and I took quite a lot of time admiring the work he’s put into his 750. His PF3 windshield has been modified quite a bit, and I actually confused it for a PF2. A few photos were snapped and we revved our engines to life. Rolling out, I fell into line behind Curt, who is a good ride leader – paying attention to so much of what’s going on. I spent a lot of time looking in my mirrors at the formation. I felt both nervous and excited to be part of a group as we rolled toward Chattanooga.
Our first fuel stop was on the other side of Chattanooga near Monteagle. I found that the mild discomfort I felt when I woke up was becoming a migraine. I took some medicine for it and set my mind to try to ignore it and enjoy the ride. I got a good laugh as the bass-ackwards ramp design threw Curt for a loop and we all had to do a U-Turn to take the entrance ramp that lay on the right side of the road instead of the left.
The mountains in this region are so beautiful and it is so easy to forget that you’re on a superslab when you roll through the twisties at a 6% grade! If not for the careless cages severing our group at every chance, I would think we were on a sweet back country road.
As the day progressed, my headache got worse, but I still was having too much of a good time to let it bother me. Up near Nashville, we skirted across to I40 for a short while and I was impressed to find that I actually spotted Steve perched atop the overpass to snap a photo of our gang. At the next exit, we pulled over to the truck stop to meet up with our photo-sniper, Vince, and Carvey. A few hugs and several photos later, we rolled out again. My headache was still arguing with my sense of freedom and camaraderie, but I quelled it by falling back to the end of the pack. Carvey, a tailgunner and good friend of mine in the virtual world we had known before now, joined me at the end of the pack. What a sight! Now I know why he’s a tailgunner (and a damn good one too!), there’s NOTHING like the sight of a bunch of bikes perfectly lined up in staggered formation rolling down the road. When you get to see lane changes and hand signals executed so well from that vantage point, you don’t want to ride anywhere else in the pack. I have decided to pronounce myself a Tailgunner In Training (I love the acronym!).
A short while later, we found our next stop and picked up Beavis and Snort, who made our clan look even more impressive. I overheard a discussion about how many bikes it takes to be allowed to block off an intersection to let the whole formation through. Something told me we would soon need to do just that. By now, my headache had fully announced its presence and had finally begun to take toll on my energy. I was a bit dismayed to learn that we still had about an hour to go. Off we went, with Uncle Gomer doing a fine job of blocking the lane at the stop light so we could pour out of the gas station all in one group. About an hour later, as promised, we pulled into Shawnee Bay resort. I love the twisties they made in the road to the lake. I would have liked to take them faster, but this was a two-way road and it could be dangerous to do so. I made a comment that these turns have no business being on a two-way street.
Pulling in behind the harmonious exhaust rumble and multiple different horns, Carvey spotted Cabin 1 at the same time that I noticed Rita’s car. We rolled up and I could barely get off my T’Pol fast enough to greet my Floridian friend. After introductions, and some unpacking, it was declared that we were headed to Benton to have dinner. Nurse Rita aided my headache with some more medicine and we piled into an even bigger group to head out to Benton for some BBQ. Carvey and I took up the rear again. WOW is all I can say. First, I got to see the massive pack roll single file through the resort’s twisties, then we got to kick back and admire the view of probably 20 Vulcans ahead of us, again, in perfect formation. At one point, Carvey pulled along side me and shouted something while pointing ahead. I could not make out his words from behind the full face helmet. He shouted and pointed again, but could not defeat my exhaust and his helmet. I looked ahead and noticed the sun turning a gentle orange just above the horizon. As the clouds gently kissed the edges of the sun, I realized what he was saying and I turned to Carvey to confirm that I got his message. No sooner had I acknowledged Carvey, then we rounded a curve and I gasped at the vision. I was so upset that I did not have a camera mounted on the bars to take this photo. The image is permanently burned into the minds of those of us who held back to the end of the formation. The sun was setting just above our fleet of 750s. I was awestruck. I stretched out my arms and welcomed the visualization.
In Benton, our pipes rumbled off the brick walls that lined the streets. Each bike had it’s own pitch, but the frequencies were perfectly harmonized. I heard later of one member revving and slowing over and over in the group. Someone asked what he was doing and he exclaimed, “I’m playin’ a song!” Indeed, brother!
As a group, we gotta work on our parking technique. Some have done the group method of swinging out and backing into place, but it was obvious that this technique confused others. As we looked like a swarm of bees, waiting to land, our row of Vulcans slowly came to shape. We invaded the four pigs restaurant and scared away the locals. I got to meet several new faces and struggled to keep up with the names.
After dinner, Pick stood up and announced the ride that was planned for the morning and that some of us were making a beer run. I tagged along for the run only because I needed to go to Wally World to get supplies for chili. Though the ride was nice, I was pelted with bugs and my vision was getting rapidly obscured by the splatter.
We arrived at what was supposed to be the place for our alcoholic purchases, but found ourselves in a shady side of town. Our troop turned around and some took advantage of the stop for directions to grab some fuel. One more stoplight down the road, Bulldog, the navigator, found salvation! We poured into the liquor store which resembled a Hallmark store from the outside. I made a B-Line to the bathroom, for now my stomach took over causing me grief where my head had finally given up. I learned the hard lesson about habanero peppers – they sure do make you unpopular the day after you eat them. I think Bulldog was crying when he got out of the bathroom behind me. He mentioned that it reminded him of Mustard Gas training in the military. Second stop was Wally World where I stocked up on all of my chili-making needs. I also remembered to fetch the vital supplies like coffee. We piled a ton of groceries into whomever’s basket was nearest. This led to a fun session of “who buys what” at the checkout. I noticed that Ralph had picked up a roll of duct tape. Not wanting to encourage him further, but being observant, I spotted a foot-wide roll of duct tape that wasn’t much more expensive. Wow, I should keep my mouth shut. Fortunately, Ralph chose not to supply the tree-taping group with ammo.
I pushed my cart out to the parking lot where half of our crew waited. I turned around and headed back inside. At the checkout, Bulldog thought I had forgotten something, until I made the allusion that I was dropping off, not picking up. Note to self – no more habaneros! I saw a look of fear on Bulldog’s face! I’m sure he wondered just what kind of chili I was preparing.
Heading back to Shawnee Bay was interesting. Bulldog is not the best navigator. We made some wrong turns and some false-wrong turns (or maybe he was just testing our reflexes). Then Uncle Gomer decided to bathe me in windshield washer fluid, which further diminished my ability to see through the bug guts. I hugged his bumper so I could have a point of reference on the road, which I was able to see less and less of. The choice in riding directly behind the van was a mistake. Uncle Gomer was obviously concerned for the glass bottles in his van because he rode the brakes through every turn. That’s fine for the bottles, but those of us behind him got a blast of blinding brake lights while trying to navigate those turns.
Surviving the trip back to the cabin, we joined the party down by the water for some good ol’ BSing. I chose to retire early, as did Rita. I helped push her back up the hill in her wheelchair and we all settled into our respective sleeping places. What a day!

Friday, August 27
Day 2

I woke fairly early and found the group of riders preparing to go on their ride. I told Rita that I was deciding not to go. For one thing, someone needed to stay behind with her. For another, I would need to prepare the chili with enough time to let it simmer before dinner. My final reason was due to the long ride the day before – I just was not up for going for another 200 miles with the large group.
I spent most of my morning at the Teton lodge talking to a few others who remained behind. When Flemdog rolled up, I was among the first to run out to greet him – or so I thought. He had actually been there for quite some time and had already unloaded his bike and talked to the group in cabin 1. I ran up and hugged him and so did the rest of the group. When Dianna arrived on the scene, Mark took the chance to drop to his knee and bow to the Goddess.
Lunch time arrived and Flemdog, Rita, and I decided to go into town. I made a quick stop at Wally World to find some Thank You cards and we ate lunch at another barbeque place. Rita loves to ride in the sidecar, and I felt honored to ride with Flemdog.
Later, after we got back, a few of us took a swim in the lake and then I learned of the spline lube clinic being held a few cabins over. I attended and learned what I could. I was amazed that our victim… errr… student was taking so many different inputs without his head exploding.
I started the pot of chili. Just in time, the crew who rolled out in the morning began to pull in to the resort and tell us of their ride. Carvey told me about a spectacular lightning strike which caused a tree to explode.
Dinner was being set up. There were lots of dishes to choose from and three main courses. Curt was grilling bratwurst (I have to teach him the Yankee tailgate party method of cooking brats), Knifemaker was making some awesome hamburgers, and I brought the chili. I made an announcement that most cooks tend to eat last, but I was not “most cooks.” I think people got the hint because a chili line formed behind me as I scooped out my bowl. I’ve grown used to my chili over the years, so this was a normal taste to me. However, I was assaulted by a barrage of compliments from each person who took their first bite of my recipe. I’ve had cooking compliments before, usually one here or there, but I was beside myself with the overwhelming gratitude given to me over this. Those words were nothing compared to the ultimate compliment of seeing everyone scarf down their serving and the full pot of chili disappear before I could even finish one bowl. I soon began to see looks of disappointment when people approached the pot and found it to be empty. When I found out how many had missed their chance for a bowl of chili, I summarily announced that I would not only make another pot for Saturday, but I would go ahead and make two so everyone could have a chance to try some. About that time, Knifemaker’s burgers began to flow from the grill and all was good.
I didn’t stay for the subsequent BS sessions that followed dinner and I missed the attempted Pick Pitch. *note to self: construct a portable trebuchet for next year.

Saturday, August 28
Day 3

Rita and Flemdog escaped for a butt-crack-of-dawn coffee run. I actually heard Rita get up, but didn’t know they were going for coffee. She announced to me after she got home that she joined NANMRA in downtown Benton while in the sidecar. I think she shocked Flemdog momentarily as she waved her shirt over her head like a flag.
I got up a little later and prepared some of my own go-juice to start the day. Later, we made a cage-run to town to fill up on chili supplies in Rita’s SUV. Hoot tracked us down at Wally World and traded his bike for shotgun in the cage so Fallguy could see how he liked the windshield. We ran to a local bike shop to take a look around, but there seemed to be little more than some overpriced sunglasses, a few batteries, and plenty of skimpy women’s clothing (or pictures thereof). We decided to run to lunch at the same bbq place we had been to the day before. Upon return to Shawnee Bay, I got wind that the group photo was being planned.
We lined up all of the bikes in front of the Shawnee Bay sign. If anything could match the vision of our bikes rolling into the sunset, this was it. I kicked myself for not bringing the tripod, but I did my best to make a panorama. If it comes out, I will certainly share it. No sooner did we get back from the photo shoot, and an ACCT clinic was started. I raced to the Teton to attend. I had no idea that the preload is so easy to do. The pioneers of this technique learned by trial and error, but the knowledge passed to me and a few others made this job completely simple. Just as the information was finished, Hoot arrived with his rattling cam chains. His T’Pol was howling in cam chain hell. We gave him little choice and scavenged his ACCTs like a pack of rabid mechmos. I took the port-side ACCT, still cooking hot, back to the patio table to begin dissection. In a matter of five minutes, I had the tensioner reassembled with the new pre-loaded spring. Now, here’s where I see that our founders had their problems. I had to wrestle with the tension on the spring while reinstalling the circlip. Had I done it right the first time, I wouldn’t have needed an additional five minutes to reassemble the ACCT two more times. Yes, I did use the beer-can T-tool to hold the spring, but you really need about three hands to do this efficiently. When I finished reassembly, I rushed out to put it back on T’Pol so Deuce could use the T-tool for the starboard tensioner. I am glad that I paid attention. I no more than finished reinstalling the tensioner and announcing that it was done and someone suggested, “let’s hear it!” NOOOO! I swiped the keys out of the dash and pocketed them. It had slipped some minds that the other tensioner was still uninstalled. I took the meantime to talk to Jax, who had just arrived, and thank him in person for the Kuryakyn highway pegs that he sold to me from Annabelle. Deuce returned in short time to give Hoot his other tensioner, freshly rebuilt. When all of the bolts were back on, I returned Hoot’s keys to him. The moment of truth arrived, the starter cranked, and T’Pol revved to life with a youthful vigor and silenced cam chains. Success!
Wow, where did the time go? Dinner was just about to be served. Just as I was wiping my hands, I saw Beavis walking by with one of my two pots of chili. He was determined that he was not going to be left out of his bowl of chili this time.
Dinner was served. In addition to several new dishes of food, we had Jax’s ribs too. Wow, I want his recipe! I told him that his ribs could be put into my chili and make perfection. I ate and ate and ate. Everyone brought such good food.
After dinner, we began the giveaways by first giving a few gifts to Dianna and Starr that we secretly put together off-group. I was glad to see how much appreciation rained on them both.
The raffle and 50/50 took forever. We had so much stuff to give away. There were more than a few multiple winners that night. Loran earned his new nickname “Deuce” because he won two of everything. When the raffle ended, we were going to have trivia for the box of smaller prizes, but we changed our minds and let the hyenas tear the carcass apart (I was one of them). Everything wound down and drinks came out. Again, I did not stay very late, but I’m told that I missed out on some interesting conversations about a 1600 Nomad while a bottle of Jack got emptied.

Sunday, August 29
Day 4

I demanded that Rita wake me up if another coffee run was to be made. I also mentioned my request to Flemdog, just in case Rita tried to be “polite” by letting me sleep. No need for either, as I heard them both wake up Sunday morning and I joined in the ride. Rita didn’t NANMRA this time, but gave me a nice flash as we cruised the empty streets of town before dawn. We got our coffee and sat out on the bikes and talked until the sun came up. I would have liked to go for a refill and stay longer, but all good things must come to an end. I followed Flemdog home and listened to his cobra pipes singing with my own. As we approached the Shawnee Bay twisties, I pulled alongside him to let him hear the music I had been enjoying. One last zip through those curves and then it was time to pack and say my goodbyes.
When I got to the Teton, I spotted a comatose Jax, face down on the couch. I went out to the patio and commented that he was supposed to join us for our ride back. Everyone chipped in that they severely doubted that he would be conscious from his Jack hangover before noon and VOILA! Jax appeared through the patio door with coffee in hand and looking bright as the sun. How does he do that?
Uncle Gomer, brought up the rear as Jax led Mokiman, Me, and Kathy out of Kentucky. We hopped on I24 and went to Nashville, where Jax and Vince split off. Curt and I finished our trip home without event and I parted with him when I reached Lookout Mountain.

I can sum the whole weekend up in one word. Family. Thank you all for one of the best weekends ever.

Kentucky Lake 2004 – Loose Cannon’s version

Sunday, August 29
Day 4
