I've never seen any Moly60 grease but this is what it looked like to me, black silvery looking grease (Not oil). After todays ride I went to check the stator wires I re-routed between the goat's belly and engine when I noticed a 6" strip of grease on the rear wheel's rim lip...like it dripped out while setting...not slung all around the wheel (The stuff sticks pretty good, making me think Moly60).

Couldn't see anything leaking and noticed an inch or so slot on the bottom of the final drive. The PO said he had just lubed the splines which would put it about 1500 miles ago. Is this slot for excessive spline lube to escape?

Anyhow, I cleaned everything up so I could monitor the situation and was just wondering if this seems normal...anything to be much concerned about or not? Today was the first time I saw this.

yes, sounds like the moly60...I did my splines about 400mi ago and used a little too much moly and see the same thing in the rim after a ride...little drops of grease below that slot. It seems to occur less, the more I ride it.

Yes I have seen the same on by bike, after a ride usually on a hot day, and a long ride. I must have put a lot on the gear drive the last time I did the splines. It is really no problem. Ride on and have fun.

Here's a good website that talks about grease on the rear wheel: http://www.cdthayer.com/cruisermaint_3.htm . I bookmarked it, because I have grease on mine.

Much thanks! I wasn't sure if there was some sort of grease seal involved or not. Couple more 1000 miles and I'll need to replace the rear tire and get a good look inside then.

BTW, nice link ksmnet. Lots of good info with helpful pictures that makes the work look a lot easier than the manual does. A lot easier to understand.

I haven't checked into it, but don't we have an O-ring that keeps the grease in and dirt and dust out? My GL500 has one that's replaced each time the rear end is re-lubed.

Yeah, click on the link and last picture of the Final Drive stuff shows it. He had same problem and apparently it was not an issue.
