Hey guys, I just want to thank everyone for the info that is provided here. I began having a tran problem on the upshift from 1-2. I was afraid I had done some major damage while riding home Monday morning. I had to hit the throttle and race through gears to avoid becoming road kill. At the next red light, normal take off (for me: slow and easy), 2-3k rpm, clutch, shift, NO 2nd just neutral. Down shift to 1 no problemo. Try again several times without success. Fortunately, only 1/2 mile to home and putter at 10mph all the way. First order of business, GO TO FORUM AND RESEARCH. Found several threads that were similar, used info from all. Started conservatively, checked clutch cable and adjustment(Good). Check oil by placing bike on center stand and viewing sight glass(AHA! Milk chocolate, and according to our more experienced members: Overfill (no bubble in sight glass). Could it be that simple? YES, sometimes. Oil change without overfill this morning with test drive (AFTER ALLOWING BIKE TO WARM UP FOR about 5 MIN. TO WORK OUT BUBBLES IN THE SYSTEM. VERY IMPORTANT!!!) and no problems with up or down shifts. Now: OIL; anyone tried Royal Purple? Can of worms.

One other thing you may want to look at is the shift lever. If the clamp bolt is loose it can sometimes cause the lever to slip on the shaft and not shift properly.

And if too loose, you end up losing the bolt, then try to shift, then realize there is no shift lever there??!!
(Been there, done that )

Good to here you're back up & running!! :smiley_th

After reading several older posts this was one of the things I checked. I also checked for side-to-side movement of the shifter shaft to see if the cerclip had broke. Fortunately, the shift lever was still tight and there was less than 1/8" freeplay in the shaft.
