Spence,
With this forum can we get the posts mailed to us like with Yahoo? I do that rather than reading them on-line and use mail filtering to direct all the mail to one folder and then group the posts by subject, which makes it easy for me to find, read and reply to topics.

If this forum is going to be the only interface and way to get the posts, I'm not liking that already.

Hoot, I assume that you are using outlook express to read your mail. Do you have Internet access at work? I'm working on the mass e-mail part so it will function like Yahoo, go directly to your smtp account. I have a few bugs to work out but I'm testing it right now. You also have a mailbox associated with your username on the Forum. You can send and recieve out of that.

I'll keep you posted.

Since I am using a Mac iBook, I try to stick to the Mac based systems. I use Apple's on board email host "Mail". I have used Outlook and Outlook Express. This Mail works a lot like them. I already have the yahoo group mail, and several of my other email accounts directly downloading. Just curious about this one too.

Hoot I may be wrong, but I think you can watch all the posts.

Spence :D

Watching a post and being notified that it has been responded to is nice, but having the posts directly emailed is even better.

Also, when you get the email part working, will we be able to respond to the post via email as well, like we can now ?

Thanks

Rob, I checked out Vbulletin as you suggested. http://www.vbulletin.com/
I concur with your thoughts, it does look like a better way to go. Would give us more capability and would be easier in the long run to maintain, which is very important, as you will get busy and you will need others to help pick up the slack when needed. Plus there is the tech support community and a built in FAQ builder system.

The one advantage of yahoo is that someone else maintains it. Maintenance can be a big headache, and time consumer, and you probably already know that freeware, has a cost - lol, your time...

I'll help with the cost of the owned license which is $160. If we can get eight people to kick in $20 for it, or 16 to kick in $10, or .... we are there., or worst comes to worst I'd split the cost with you, but I'd want a % of the profits...LOL :-)

Do you have a paypal account? We could always ask for a donation and any extra could go for tech support or to defray the cost of the web server you are generously providing, etc...

Let me know.

Chris

Spence, do you have a paypal account, so you can receive the money? Just trying to figure out how best to do this.

Also, I have no doubts on your ability to do this, but I know what kind of work and hours it takes to keep an application running and serviced, databases backed up, security patches applied, bugs tracked down, user problems fixed, hacker damage repaired, etc.. However, I am concerned about the long term ability to keep a private forum running. You know how busy you have been and that it has taken a while before you have had time to look into this excellent idea. One thing that should be seriously considered is a vBulletin hosting service, where the service does all the maintenance work. Even if it costs a bit each month or year, that is going to be way cheaper than your time, my time or anyone elses time. And I think we can get enough people to pitch in a few bucks to help make this happen. However all I could find last night are hosting services, like you are using for this forum. I have not yet found anyone that will maintain specific services like vBulliten. Got any thoughts on this?

Yes, Chris you can PP me at obageegee@hotmail.com. I understand your concern about my availability. Yes I do get taxed very often at work but I'm usually available. If not me, Dianna has graciously volunteered to be my backup. PHPbb2 is pretty much self sufficient. It's easy to setup and requires minimal patching. However Vbulliten is a VERY powerful forum package and blows the doors off php. I will start a thread and see if anyone wants to contribute and then we can make the switch before we get too many registered users. I'll start it today. As always, feel free to give me a call at home and we can chat further.

Regards,

Rob

Ok, good. I've started to collect info on vBulletin features for the thread/fund plea. I tried the admin demo and I was very impressed with the tool. It has built in database backup support as well. If you have not started the thread yet, I can.

Also I can help too, I'm just not always available. I've got 20 years exp in sw field, mostly embedded systems, but I have about 8 years in IT, considered a database guru by some, and a tools guru by others (but I don't consider myself a guru or an expert, just someone who keeps trying, an who - eventually can get things to work  ) .

I can help you moderate and configure Vbulletin. I can script as well, but I don't know PHP or any of the new scripting languages, but always wanted to learn it and this is as good of reason as any to start.

Just let me know what you want me to do, and I'll let you know when it is either done, or when I can get to it.

Chris
