: Shifter
artman 10-27-2007, 07:27 PM Ok I got trouble. The shift pedal just fell loose........no it's not the bolt.....it is loose from the inside. I have the bad bad feeling that I am gonna have to pull the engine for this repair. Anyone have any input on this problem..........
Thanks in advance.
curtis97322 10-27-2007, 09:56 PM Loose up down or loose in/out?
I think what you're saying loose up/down - which will probably require an engine pull.
If it's loose in/out there's a simple work around which ya can probably find or ask here and I or someone else will post (basically ya shim it on the outside - there's a c-clip on the inside that comes loose).
Sky Rider 10-28-2007, 12:39 AM If it's loose up and down you have broken the connectiing shaft that moves the shift pawl. If this is the case, it will not only involve an engine pull, but the case will have to be split as well. This is not as intimidating as it sounds as long as you use clean shop techniques and follow the Clymer's manual. It is much more detailed than the Kaw manual. I've split mine and got it back together again so it's not as bad as it seems.
The really bummer part is that the broken part is about $5 or so. It's part 39110 on the microfiche. http://www.ronayers.com/fiche/400_0214/gear_change_mechanism/gear_change_mechanism.cfm?man=ka&groupid=10900&parent=10700
artman 10-29-2007, 04:54 PM Yeah Sky, it's the engine pull !!!!! I figured the part can't be too expensive.
Any other advice on the split?

If you haven't already, might consider putting a stator in while the engine is out.

artman 10-29-2007, 06:47 PM Did the stator a year ago ....it looks ok
Sky Rider 10-30-2007, 10:40 PM Just follow the Clymer's and you should be OK. Make sure you get all the timing marks lined up when you put her back together as well. One thing to note is that both the Clymer's and the Kaw manual are a bit misleading when they talk about how many links to count around the chains. It's actually the pins and not the entire link IIRC. It took me a bit to figure that one out but it did save a bunch of time when getting it all lined up.
Be careful with the case halves as the main bearings are soft brass and are easily scored or damaged. Like I said earlier, clean shop techniques.
Watch out for the little steel balls that make up the positive neutral finder in the tranny. They can fall out without you even knowing and they are tiny!!! There are 3 of them so make a visual inspection before you put that particular tranny shaft back in. That and make sure all the tranny shims, if any, are in the right place upon reassembly.
wwmkwood 10-31-2007, 01:30 PM make sure you pay attention to the washers on the transmission shafts, one side calls for two washers in the same location. another bit of advice, use "the Right Stuff" between the case halves when you reassemble.
artman 11-01-2007, 12:05 PM Ok, thanks fellas........I'm going to begin the split tomorrow......also looking for another ride in the mean time......possibly a Kawi 2000

When my vn750 lost a head gasket, I picked up my 02' Meanstreak to have something to ride and have never regretted it. Great bike to ride. Sort of like a vn750 on steroids.
You can lower mileage ones between $ 5 - 7K. 02'-03's are 1500's, 04'+ are 1600's but it makes little to no difference. The 15/1600's are very reliable stout engines.
Only problem is it's hard to get back on the 750 after riding the 1500.
The Kaw 2000's are nice, but really big, I like something to throw around in corners too.

artman 11-07-2007, 04:19 PM Jon, I picked up a suzuki intruder 1400cc last Saturday. ......I have'nt touched the 750 since then !!!!!! Yipes faaaaaassssssssttttt !!!!!!

I do not blame you one bit.
I would love to have a honda valkrey six cylinders six carbs six exhaust pipes..... I better quit. I might go out and find one.
Have fun with your new bike....

Imagine this, I am 5'2" 120 lbs. in a rain storm, maybe.
Sky Rider 11-08-2007, 06:44 PM It's not the size of the rider on the bike but the size of the spirit of the rider on the bike. I've seen petite women riding Harley Fat Boys or Gold Wings. If that is the bike that floats your boat, you will find a way to ride it and make it look good!!
93VN750 11-09-2007, 09:41 AM Only time bike's size matters is stopped at a red light, or if you have to pick it up for some reason, other than that, once rolling, they are all about the same.
Sure a big heavy cruiser is harder to manuver at low speed, but rolling down the highway is no challenge.

artman 11-11-2007, 04:27 PM 1996.......................paid 1800 cash................clean as a whistle...........
yeah it looks very similar much roomier though and roughly 600 lbs.
A little floppy at slow speeds. It has a 36 degree rake and around a 6 inch trail.
Sky Rider 11-11-2007, 04:31 PM So, whachya gonna do with the Vulcan????
artman 11-13-2007, 04:29 PM Gonna fix it......got most of it torn apart......am hung up by needing a special tool to remove the clutch
Sky Rider 11-15-2007, 07:02 PM When I was puttnig my bike back together, I too needed the tool for holding the clutch basket but freaked when I saw the $70 price tag Kaw wanted.
Ron Ayers has the same tool but not the Kaw brand for about $30.
Being the cheapskate that I am, I searched the web for another alternative and found one. A gentleman by the name of Steve Laslo had posted this on his website. Unfortuanatly, it is no longer up but I still have the picture.
I posted it earlier in a different thread and the system won't let me reupload it. Here's the link though. http://www.vn750.com/forum/showthread.php?t=2782
The write up is as follows: "What I ended up doing in this case was drilling two holes in a large "C" shaped Vise Gip jaws at the correct point to clamp teh grooves on the clutch basket. I tapped the holes at 1/4X20 NC. I used two bolts about 1 1/2 inches ling and screwed tehm into the holes. The two nuts keep the screws in place. Brace the Vise Grips against something on teh frame, foot pet, bolt, whatever, depending on if you are tightening or loosening things."
It does work
