im hearing alot about splines.i bought a 99 vn750 from a neighbor.he changed the rearend just prior to selling.said he paid like $1100 for it.does this mean the splines are new, and should be properly lubed? should i check them?

It could mean the splines are used and properly lubed, or it could mean the splines are new and no moly 60 has been applied. I'd check 'em - it's an easy process (Fergy has a whole write-up - check his posts), and better safe than sorry!

I agree, it's a fairly easy job. It took me all of about 45 minutes following Fergy's write up (http://pages.tstar.net/~fergy/writeups/final_drive1.html). My bike is a 2000 that had the final drive replaced @ ~9k miles. The splines still had plenty of lube when I checked them, but the piece of mind is priceless. I believe that the lube frequency is supposed to be around 9k miles if I remember right. If you check 'em now you have a point of reference and you know for sure that there's moly 60 in there.

thanks for the info guys.i will check it asap.if the splines are new will it be obvious because whatever it was that he replaced has less than 2000 miles on it.

Just make sure that you lube the splines with Honda Moly 60 or its equivalent. The final drive needs a "sturdy" lube - lithium grease, etc. won't do it for you. And, since you'll be in there anyway, might as well have some on hand.

The gear oil in the end unit is easy to change and cheap. Do that at the same time.

Splines, splines, splines........ splines are talked a lot about in various threads and by the amount of discussion I gather that they're of particular interest. Yet I just looked in my Owner's Manual for my 2006 and never even saw the word spline in it. "Big T" above said that he thought the frequency to lube was around 9000 miles but I have yet to see that anywhere in writing.
Admittedly I may have simply missed it. But if I am then I am consistently missing it.
Is the Owner's Manual use of the term "propeller shaft joint" the same as saying "splines"? That's on a 10K mile cycle.
I am a big believer in unfailing periodic maintenance.

Yes. The propeller shaft joint is the same as splines.
