Going down the road and then about 15 miles from town..... nothing!!! 5 grades of neutral.... had to get truck and haul it home... about 650.00 in parts later to get it fixed plus the down time to get it done!!

OH WAIT..... I almost forgot.... this was not on my bike!! or any other VN!
This was someones 2004 Yamaha V-Star 650!!! :pepper:

Seems that we are not the only ones that have issues with splines! Even worst, although I have not seem a repair manual for this bike, from the way the rear end is put together on these bikes, it looks like you look the splines square in the eye every time you take the back tire off and this bike has had at least two tires since new put on ( three total )! So that is just bad maintenance!

Plus side that I found is that "new" rear gear sets for this bike is about half that what we would spend on ours.

Now that this has happened, A gal I work with how also rides a 2005 V-Star 650 is listening to me now on the importance of spline health.... we will be doing the whole VN treatment to her V-Star next spring!!

So to all that have lost their splines.... others feel your pain...( not just VN riders ) you just don't hear about it very often!

Whew! Glad it wasn't yours! I've heard that the newer V-Stars have a problem with the final drive alignment...often off by a couple of degrees, which chews 'em up over time. So even if the bike had moly, it wouldn't have helped.

Moly would have helped... I'd lay money on it that the wrench put plain grease on it if anything at all!!

Well, I hate to see anyone have these issues, but like Cindy said, glad it wasn't yours!

Well there's a point - no moly means no splines in short order. That said, I've ruled out V-Stars 'cause of the alignment issue. The guy from whom I bought my 83 Virago project said his buddy had a newer (2002?) 1100 Vstar and had replaced the final drive a couple of times already. And at least in that case, it was mis-aligned - moly I can address; a few degrees this way or that way, way beyong my skill level! :)

Hey now!!
Even George Barris (world renowned custom car builder) didn't know how to do everything right off the bat!!
You've done more than many other girls and even guys would attempt!! I know you have surpassed me in the remove/repair and replace line-up!!

You have it in you, Cindy! I know you do!!
I'm sure if you needed to, you'd have very little trouble getting a V-Star's rear alignment spot on target!!

:hitanykey Aha!! That's when I'm supposed to be using The Motivator! I knew there was something wrong when I tried to use that to install the mechanical seal. :smiley_th

LMAO. I have one Super-Duper Motivator, and two smaller ones (okay, they're otherwise known as "rubber mallets"). I'm sure in a pinch, I could make the little ones work. It would all sound very zen-like from outside the garage: "Oooohhhhhhhmmmmmmmmmmmm....POW!" "Oooooohhhhhhhhmmmmmmm...BANG!"
