: Fire!!!

I just bought a VN750 on eBay for $600. The reason it was so cheap is because the previous owner messed with the carbs after it sat too long and gummed up. After cleaning them the engine would not run (only sputter) so he ordered some carbs off eBay. When he installed the new carbs he had a fire and had to replace the intake system. He gave up after that (thank God) and sold the bike to me. I haven't dug into it yet, but do you think there is anything I should look at besides rebuilding the carbs? Do you think he told me the whole story? Could this be a timing issue or something? If you have some thoughts, please let me know.

The bike is in otherwise good condition. I used to ride a Honda Magna 750 and a Harley Superglide with a 1340 engine. I can't wait to get back on the road.

If anyone can help, thanks in advance...
