Can a clutch cable out of adjustment prevent a bike from starting?

To make a long story short, my bike will not start. Thinking this was an electrical problem, I have focused on the starter, relay, battery, etc... All of which appear to be fine. Then my wife was talking to a guy that had a simular problem with a Yamaha. He said his problem turned out to be something related to the clutch. I have notice that clutch cable does need adjusted. When pulling it, it kind of steps or catches about four or five times before it is completely squeezed. I didn't think at first that it was related to the starting problem, but maybe it does. I haven't touched that yet because I didn't want to and to my problems, but adjusting the clutch cable should be fairly easy, right. Any case that is tonights project.

For the complete story see the thread "bad starter" in the electronics forum.

If your bike is in neutral them the clutch shouldn’t matter. If it’s in gear then it’s a different story. Good luck.

You can start the bike without the clutch if you are in neutral. That would be one thing to check.
Clutch is only needed for startup if you are in gear.
You might also try spraying the clutch lever joint with electrical contact cleaner. Mine tends to stick if I have been through some heavy rain and cleaning the contact switch by the clutch lever freed it up.
There is a small switch/lever etc that indicates the clutch is engaged.
One other switch (gee they added enough safety switches huh!) is the kickstand switch. This usually only comes into play once you have started the bike and put the kickstand up and put it into gear. the bike will die because the switch is still depressed making the bike think the kickstand is still down.
Just what is happening when you try to start?

I've been tring to start it with the bike in neutral, on the center stand, kick stand up. Currently the bike turns but won't start. Previously the only thing that happened was the starter relay would click.

I didn't get much time tonight to work on the bike but what I did get done was putting the starter and relay back on, re-topped off the oil, and adjusted the clutch cable. I still need to use the spray to clean-up the clutch lever. the cable adjustment helped some but the clutch lever still clicks thru the travel.

The BIG news was that the bike did start once. This was after the starter was re-installed. Remember I had it of for the shop to inspect it. During which they had it apart.
