: Can we make the site any better?

this sub-forum asks "Can we make the site any better? Have a suggestion? Let us know."

For starters I am one of the lost, rural minority that still uses dialup. However, I do still manage to navigate the web fairly well. But--- these pages are the s l o w e s t to load I've seen.

Could it be that the graphical layout of the pages is to blame? They load slow enough that I am able to see things that others may not see-like large wallpaper (?) stuff that after it loads is then covered up by other stuff. The top banner is an example. Where you see a pretty red bike on the left and and the V emblem on the right, I get to see a huge wall of something load beneath it first, then the bike etc. For what purpose?

And I don't know what slows the rest of it down, but slow it is. This is relative to other forums and typical web pages I visit. I really like the information here and would like to participate more but it is just too slow.

Maybe nothing can be done about it. I know the PGR site has a link for dialup users that is better. Just a thought...

And I know that my connect speed doesn't help. I can't change that either. But dialup is the world I'm in and I can only compare this site to others I visit at the same connect speed. Every thing here that I click on has to load what seems like the same stuff for most of the page before I actually get to something new. I may not be describing all that just right but dust off your modem and try it on this site.

This is not a gripe. I'm sure the layout suits most users. The content is excellent and the help and information second to none. And that is the only reason I occassionally sit back and try to look at some of the topics.

I'm just asking: could the behind the scenes design of the site be changed to speed things up? If not, well that's cool. Just asking.

Try this link...this is the "lo-fi" version:

as an archive that is a good, quick option. thanks. apparently, you still have to come back to the "hi-fi" version to post or reply. thanks for the clue..

Jeff, I want to make sure we all can view the site easily. Let me work on a basic skin that has as little graphics as possible that can be chosen depending on your internet speed.. I can't say its going to be available very soon....but give me some time and I'll put something together.

Since it's the information you want to be able to read, if I were you I'd turn off image loading. It will make things faster and if you need to see an image, turn it back on temporarily. Just a few years ago I switched from dialup at our home. Not so many that I don't remember the pain. I've done lots of browsing with images turned off!
Should be in your browser preferences or options.

DMAG, I appreciate your effort - sorry to cause you work. But if it can done eventually, I'm sure some of us will certainly take advantage.

Fergy, I don't know why I didn't think of your suggestion earlier. It does seem to help. Of course it becomes the default then for all web sites, but I will try it for awhile. Thanks...

If you're running Firefox, you can go into the preferences and next to where the checkbox is for loading images automatically, you should have an "exceptions" button. Click on it, and type in www.vn750.com, and vn750.com and tell it to block them. That way it's only going to block this site's images and will allow any other site to load images. However, I noticed that there is no "reply" button now on any thread. There is a "post quick reply" form button though. There's also a Go Advanced button, but I haven't tried it to see what options it has. Hope this helps!

The "Go Advanced" button gives you the normal reply to thread, and has image holders for where the usual smileys and add image buttons were above the text box, along with the font colors etc. But you can't see them. You have to hover your mouse over them to get a pop up text explanation of what's there. Kind of like feeling around in the dark.

Hey thanks for asking. I too am on dial-up and generally follow the Yahoo group, vn750, more because it's quicker and easier.
Just have to wait for the emails to download and I'm good to go.
Having a dial-up friendly option here would be great as I don't think I'm going hi-speed any time soon

Look above the Quick Reply box....the Post Reply" button is still there.

I'd try refreshing your cache if I were you. I can see all the images and nobody else has made mention of them not showing up for them. This may be why you cannot see the "Post Reply" button as stated above. Anyone else having this problem?

Dmag,
Fergy was referring to "feeling around in the dark" with images blocked - an option for people on dialup till a low graphics skin is developed - NOT to a problem with the site
