: congradulate me, my splines are gone
tankist 04-15-2007, 10:33 PM as i was coming back from a ride on saturday it just quit pulling and grinding noise could be heard from the left-rear. pulled clutch and coasted as much as i could. the good thing it happened one block away from home, i almost made it so no towing or anything needed - just wheeled the thing back home again. could have been much worse getting stranded far away. at least i got lucky as hell with the timing.
getting the entire final drive unit for 30$ from a guy parting out his bike on ebay... waititng on pics of an item as he still didn't put it for sale.
what can i say? :loser1: trusted the words of the previous owner who was swearing on his life he did look at those. i figured he couldn't have pull it through 16,000 miles without and the bike had all the signs of being really taken care of otherwise. the bike is at over 19K miles right now...
so waiting on the parts... and it just started warming up
Ccspinner 04-15-2007, 11:32 PM Sorry to hear that, Good thing you found parts so soon.
hyperbuzzin 04-16-2007, 12:02 AM That's a bummer. Nice that the bike let ya just about make it home atleast.
$30 for the entire drive? That ain't bad, even if it isn't perfect, but hopefully better than what ya got now.

Can you send me his EBay username? I want to see if he has a clutch basket from the parts bike. Thanks.
Jeff
Foxhound 04-16-2007, 08:28 AM Just do a search on VN750. You can't miss it. He has dozens of parts for sale off the bike he's parting out.
Good deal on finding the drive assembly so quick. I haven't done a whole drive assembly replacement but it doesn't look like it would be too bad. Hope you're back on the road again soon!!
fergy 04-16-2007, 10:06 AM Is your coupling ground off too? I'd assume so. You'll want to get one of those too. Sorry to hear about your failure, but hey, thankfully you weren't on an iron butt ride somewhere!
tankist 04-16-2007, 11:53 AM yeah, the next email to the guy i will ask him to remove and sell me the coupling too. still waiting on those pics... hopefully the one he has is in good shape
joepa 04-16-2007, 11:56 AM $30?! geez I paid $300 for mine. You lucked out in more ways than one.
Dianna 04-16-2007, 12:02 PM Actually it's probably easier if he just sells you the entire drive-shaft. Less hassle taking the coupling off
Sky Rider 04-16-2007, 02:39 PM Tank,
Sorry to hear about your bike. At least it almost got you home. That and fantastic on finding parts so fast and for a really good price. Most pay over $100 for the final drive. Hopefully you'll be back on the road in a couple of weeks or so.
To me this is just more fuel to add the the "Trust but verify" fire. Previous owners/dealers can swear up and down it's been done but a check of the splines is relatively painless compared to finding parts and then waiting for them. I was lucky, mine were greased but I'm glad I checked or I could have been in the same boat.
fergy 04-16-2007, 03:05 PM You know Tank, considering that you only put 3000 miles on the bike since you bought it, I'd all but guarantee that if you'd checked them when you bought it, they were probably pretty well shot by then. Don't beat yourself up about it. You're kind of in the same boat I was, except mine was dry from the factory. Yours probably had some kind of grease in there that just wasn't enough to last that long. PO should have had it done twice before you got it.
I swear, this item should be the first thing in the Vulcan Verses, first line, first three words, Check Your Splines!
tankist 04-16-2007, 04:01 PM thanks all.
i hope i didn't jump the gun on this one as i yet to see the pics of the actual unit. i hope it is in good condition. messeged the guy asking if he would sell me the shaft as well. meanwhile i'm still watching ebay for other options. BTW there is a final drive and shaft with their splines niceley ground to death for sale for 5$+65$ shipping, not sure what the point though...
the thing is that right after the bike was offered to me i joined the forum to find out what the 750 is. obviously the first thing i asked the owner was splines. the bike had brand new tires on with not even 100 miles on them so when he said they checked and greased the coupling while the wheel was off i lowered my guard. when i think about it right now it prolly should have been a red flag right there to go in there and check for problems - he might have found the splines near death, and desided to get rid of the bike. obviously i can't know this happened for sure, i just kinda sad and stupid thoughts are getting into my mind.
oh well, even if i will miss this one, the final dirve units are on ebay pretty often. sooner or later i'll find one and put it back together
Hizzo3 04-16-2007, 05:15 PM I swear, this item should be the first thing in the Vulcan Verses, first line, first three words, Check Your Splines!
i hear ya fergy... good thing you made it home tank. btw nice find...
bulldog485 04-17-2007, 01:42 AM oh well, even if i will miss this one, the final dirve units are on ebay pretty often. sooner or later i'll find one and put it back together
I have a shaft in my garage.
tankist 04-17-2007, 02:51 AM I have a shaft in my garage.
hey, thanks a lot! but the guy i'm geting the parts from just going to throw in the shaft with the final drive purchase. talked to him on the phone, he says the coupling is in good shape, will see.
Sky Rider 04-17-2007, 09:34 PM Good luck with the parts and hope you are back on the road again soon. I agree with Fergy, a spline check should be one of the first things to look at when buying one of these bikes.
95VN750 04-17-2007, 10:40 PM Back before I joined this little happy group..... I was doing a search on our beloved bike and found this site...... going through the posts and reading the things to watch out for, I came across those three words.... "Check Your Splines" and everyones stories on the subject. Well.... that cost me the better part of two weeks riding time while I searched out the best moly lube I could get my hands on!
I have lubed them twice since then, the second time was this weekend... they were in perfect shape.....:pepper: why??? becacuse of this forum putting the fear of the unknown into me!
So if you are unsure of the amount of lube in your splines.... CHECK THEM!!!
To any first timers... the hardest part is getting started... I was nevous as hell... but looking back now, it's a breeze.... so check them!
Hey Tankist... hope your repairs go fast before weather gets good and warm and you get cabin fever for a ride!!:smiley_th
ratuck 04-18-2007, 02:47 PM I agree 100% with you. The first time I was a little neverous, but really it was a pretty easy job. I figured I was installing new exhaust, V&H Cruzers and since the spline check involved removing the exhaust to get the axle out, now was the time to do it. Man was I glad I did, mine were bone dry. But now they are happily siding in grease.
tankist 04-23-2007, 03:04 PM ok, got the package today. it should have been here saturday but the unit leaked (breather hole...) and i had to go to the post office to pick it up. the unit is in good shape but i guess he forgot the driveshaft with coupler he prommised to throw in the package after all. but for 40$ is still unbelivable deal. so now i'm looking for the coupler... worst comes to worst i'll just ronayers it ...
opened everything up on sunday, no surprises anywhere. the coupling area was bone dry, i guess that means that it was never opened (at least the PO did not try to cover up any problems). put a piece of 3/4 plywood under the centerstand so no removal of the fender (removed Licence plate) or exhaust was needed even though i still have the goat belly on. everything is very well documented on this forum already but if anyone wants i can snap couple pics of the process and/or the damage. since no driveshaft was sent to me i removed the coupler. the circlip remover tool from pepboys was useless but old pair of nose pliers worked awesome (after i used file on them a bit). don't know how much trouble i'm going to have puting it back but removal was a breathe.
I have a shaft in my garage.
Evan, does the shaft has a spline coupler on it? asking because if it does it would be the closest coupler around here . and also what do you want for it ? i have a case of good beer, or ... ?
fergy 04-23-2007, 03:15 PM I feel like I was lucky that day, but my circlip went back on as easy as it came off. You would think that with no working room, it would be a real pain to get on, but try it and it might be easy. Hope for your sake it is!
Knifemaker 04-23-2007, 05:19 PM Tank,
To me this is just more fuel to add the the "Trust but verify" fire. Previous owners/dealers can swear up and down it's been done but a check of the splines is relatively painless .
1+ . Don't trust anyone .....
KM
tankist 04-28-2007, 12:32 AM well, the entire affair is finished.
exchanged a case of beer to Bulldog's driveshaft and put everything together today. boy i had some fun with disconnecting the coupler! took me over half hour to take that circlip out. one would think it is much easier when the entire thing is easily accesable... put the circlip back at first try though, go figure...
made a quik ride tonight, everything looked good.
talkinng about timing, as i pulled back into garage i noticed that on my car one tire is almost flat (hit a very nasty pothole :( ) i was planning to ride to work tommorow but now it looks like i don't even have a choice ... oh well...
also, right now i'm a happy owner of extra final drive unit (with destroyed splines but no cracks, leaks and stuff) and driveshaft without coupler. if anyone needs it let me know .
Diana, was it you who kept spare parts repository for forum members? i can send you this stuff if you want.
Dianna 04-28-2007, 12:57 AM The drive shaft I can probably use for the parts department but the final drive unit is pretty much a boat anchor. The pinion gear needed to repair the splines is a $700 part and too much work when you can pick up a good used unit instead
bulldog485 04-28-2007, 01:03 AM I guess you can say that I gave Tank the Shaft...
(and he liked it)

:beerchug:
tankist 04-28-2007, 01:04 PM i undrstand it is very expencive to fix but maybe could be used by someone with cracked housing willing to move the iner guts into new home. i can imagine a lot of work involved but still...well, boat anchor it is.
bulldog, i guess you could say that too. but either way thanks a lot! it was a almost a "love at first sight". having the unit and not having a coupler is almost like having a new plasma screen and no wire to plug it into the power outlet.
jetboy 04-28-2007, 10:51 PM this thread has inspired me-- gonna check and grease the splines first thing tomorrow morning!
fergy 04-28-2007, 11:16 PM No matter what you find, you'll be glad you did!:smiley_th
jetboy 04-29-2007, 09:42 PM ghah! wife reminded me that i promised to do garden work! so hell yeah, the garden is looking good - thats nice, but i didnt get to the splines at all--
but i wont ride until i get em- thats the compomise promise i made to myself.
Lizzard 04-29-2007, 11:38 PM this is great info and verry good pics!
nice job !!
It's also not bad to check and/or clean the rear break while all is apart !
can't be sure enough!
I also lined out my rear tire while doiing this same job a few weeks ago.
Back on the road !!
cheers
