Just took the cover off today and fired her up. Ran fine for about 30 seconds then quit. tried to start again ran real rough then gas started dumping out right ear, stalled. heard gurgling sound took out plugs to clean them gas dumped out front cylinder plug hole. plugs on rear also wet. I'm thinking a stuck float is causing gas to fill both carbs thru the tee fitting on the vent line. Took carbs off need some words of wizdom before I take them apart to maybe free a stuck float thanks.

Did you have any seafoam in the gas over the winter? Other?
Now that you've removed the carbs I'd go ahead and clean them as good as possible. I've not been in these carbs so I can't give you advice on looking for the problem. If you hadn't removed them already, I'd be telling ya to add seafoam to the carbs and see if that doesn't free up your stuck float.

If you're pulling the carbs entirely, definitely resync - and I'd suggest not stopping at the float, but cleaning everything as long as you've pulled them off the bike. Make sure all gaskets are good, various vents unplugged, cotter pins there, etc. Anything in there could be the culprint, although a sticky float sounds likely.

But don't worry about the sync job - plenty of folks here who will walk you through it when you get there.

I just checked the tank petcock It dumps gas when turned to on or res does not have pri. This is probably the problem. when I correct this should I monkey with the carbs or just put them back on and hope for the best ? It ran fine last fall.

If the valve is dumping gas shouldn't the float cut it off when the bowls are full?

Depends on the year, some had a "prime" position on the petcock where fuel flowed without vacuum applied.

This bike is a 1990 only has res and on. gas flows out of the tank sitting on the bench with no vac line hooked to it. Is this normal or is the petcock defective. I would prefer not to tear down the carbs if i don't have to.

Is that On/Off/Res? If it has a vacuum port, then it shouldn't be leaking gas with no vacuum applied. That means your petcock needs rebuilding. It's not hard to do at all. I think ronayers.com has the kits. Not sure tho.
