I have a problem with the clutch on my wife's VN750 -86.
When I turn the handlebar all the way to the left it releases the clutch, which makes manoeuvering in small spaces quite hard.
If I turn the handlebar slowly to the right the clutch starts to engage, a quite fearful experience!
I have tried to adjust the cable but that doesnt help me.
Hope someone can help me out.

It sounds like your cable is routed wrong, or needs replacing. Make sure your adjusting barrel that's about halfway down the cable is not screwed completely apart. It's the long 1.5" silver barrel that has a locking nut below it. Most likely your cable needs replacing.

Couldnt agree more with fergy, really sounds like a routing problem or a bad cable. Also make sure you have a little play at the clutch lever before it pulls on the cable, doesnt need to be more then a 1/16".Since its an 86, if you havent already,it would be a good idea disconnecting the cable from the lever and put some oil in there over night.

Since cables usually stretch as they age, I think you've got a routing problem, or the middle/lever adjustment is off. If you have a factory or Clymer manual, you may want to adjust the cable as if you just put on a new one and see how that goes.

I have looked at the bike and it seems like a routing problem.
The user before have added a higway bar and probably routed the wire wrong after that.
