: Hitchhiker motorcycle carriers
MikeS 02-23-2007, 02:40 AM Hi All.
I was looking for a trailer alternative that I could use with my vn750 for those rare occasions when I need to get it somewhere without riding it. I saw something that looks really interesting called a Hitchiker, it mounts into a class III reciever hitch, and it holds the front wheel only. On their website it mentions that it might not work with some shaft drive bikes, and I was wondering if anyone knows if the vn750 is one of them, or is it safe to use with it? along similiar lines, does anyone know if somebody makes trailer hitches for the vn750? I've been thinking of making a custom trailer to pull my scooter behind the 750, so when I go to scooter rallies that are further away I can still do it cageless. Thanks in advance.

rckmtn 02-23-2007, 11:37 AM I checked with the K folks on this. The info I received was that the 750 can not be towed. They stated that the way it it designed the transmission would burn out.
fergy 02-23-2007, 12:12 PM I've seen carriers that slot in the receiver hitch that the bike goes on sideways. Has a ramp you pull the bike up on the carrier with, then tie it down. I built a receiver rack for my jeep that's strong enough to carry my bike, but haven't modded it to carry the bike yet. I put a floor jack under the left end of the rack when I had it on my jeep and jacked the entire rear of the jeep up with the rack so I know it's strong enough to hold my bike if I ever do make it for that.
Hizzo3 02-23-2007, 05:16 PM isnt there a small fold up trailer too? i figure if you had to make one, you could make it with a small traingle of sqr tubed steel, and an axle from like a sidekick with basic leaf springs...just needs to be a lil longer then the bike.....
fergy 02-23-2007, 05:37 PM The foldup trailer would be nice and easier to use. Only problem is having to tag it. That's the nice thing about a carrier, unless the bike's too big.

but your talking about 500+ lbs of equivilant tounge weight. That is right between a class 3 and 4... you would need a well mounted class 3 to carry the bike. Not only that, but most suv's except for the expedition excursion and durango have a suspension max of 500 lbs.... I just wouldnt trust it...
rckmtn 02-23-2007, 10:15 PM I wanted to carry the Vulcan on my rv hitch there are numerous carriers out there that claim to work. Research into load capacity of various carriers and frame configurations proved that the Vulcan is to heavy to be slung on the rear. My MH is on a F450 chassis and the weight slung that far back is to much. Check very carefully on not only your reartotal weight but remember that the formula for torque/pressure is weight X length IE 500lbsX 2 ft of extension equals 1000lbs additional on the axle. Axle bearings can be stressed and the extra weight to the rear will definately effect handling on a short wheel base. The following web site will give an insight to the problems.

Hizzo3 02-23-2007, 10:55 PM yeah thanks for clearing that up... i knew it had something to do with that, just couldnt remeber all that... I know they are great for small dirt bikes and so on... not for crusers... i think we would be better off with a ramp or something for the back of a pick up... just make sure you have room for your feet to steady yourself, or else you may fall 2 feet with 500 lbs between your legs..
Foxhound 03-31-2007, 09:13 PM I bought one of the folding trailers from Harbor Tool and Freight. I works great for towing the bike. Not too expensive. And I am using it as a bike lift for working on the bike. And the folding option makes it store easily.:smiley_th
fergy 04-20-2007, 05:38 PM James Dozier, a fellow vulcaneer that frequents the yahoo group, has a trailer that he pulls behind his old goldwing I think. It's a 4x8 trailer I believe. He's talking about putting his vulcan on the trailer and towing it to Ky Lake for the gathering with his wing, or voyager if he has one by then. I hope someone takes pictures!
Larry S 06-08-2007, 10:36 PM Would a 'Hitchiker' type work if you disconnected the drive shaft? As asecond part of that since I just got my 750 2 weeks ago; how hard is it to discnnect the drive shaft?
curtis97322 06-09-2007, 02:37 AM Short answer - it wouldn't be practical to do so. It'd be possible, but only if ya wanted to spend an hour on each end of the trip tearing the bike down and putting it back together.
Besides... why have extra wear on your expensive motorcycle tires?
Removing the wheel to do a spline lube is easy - which is basically what you'd need to do to disconnect the driveshaft (though I'm not certain if the driveshaft would be cooperative about going back in once ya pulled it all the way out). Ya have done a spline lube right?
Get a trailer and be done with it - that way ya can take the bike for a 20 minute spin mid trip if the mood strikes ya. Or ya can just ride the bike...
