JUST A WARNING OF A PROBLEM I HAD MID 90's THE OIL SUPPLY JET IN THE FRONT BEVEL BOX THAT SPRAYS OIL DIRECTLY ONTO THE BEVEL GEARS BECAME BLOCKED, THIS MUST HAVE BEEN BLOCKED FOR QUITE SOME TIME BECAUSE THE OUTER BEARING (THE BOUBLE ONES UNDER THE CHROME/RUBBER COVER) SIEZED GOING DOWN THE MOTORWAY(HIGHWAY) CAUSING THE BACK WHEEL TO LOCK, LUCKILY I HAD JUST SLOWED DOWN AS I WAS COMMING OF AT THAT JUNCTION. ON REMOVING THE COVER I FOUND THE BEARING WAS DRY AND RUSTY AND THE BALLS HAD RUN UP THE CAGE AND LOCKED THE OUTER BEARING, I MANAGED TO REMOVE THE CAGE WITH SOME PLIERS AND REMOVED THE BEVEL BOX BY THE SIDE OF THE ROAD(BIKE LENT OVER ON IT SIDE SO THE OIL DIDN'T LEAK OUT) CLEARED THE BLOCKAGE AND REASEMBLED, RAN HER WITH THE CHROME /RUBBER COVER OUT UNTIL OIL STARTED TO DRIBBLE OUT, THEN REPLACED IT AND SHE GOT ME HOME FINE.

WOW, that sounds like it could've been a near heart-stopping event.
Good thing you were slowing down !
Looks like I know what else I'll be checking while my Vulcan is down.

As mine is currently open, can you describe where the oil nozzle is so I can check mine?
Mine looks perfect and bevel gears had oil all over them so it is probably clear, but you never can be too safe.
Thanks!

i'll see if i can find a diagram or pic ,but as far as i can remember there is an oil channel runs trough the top of the cassing on the bevelbox and exits through a small hole this is what got blocked.

Now that is a first.. I've never heard of that happening before!
Usually the only problem with the bevel gear is getting the blasted thing back in place!

I must be lucky, mine went back in without any fuss at all.
