Greetings:
What a great forum for VN750 owners! I'm an elec engineer with MBA and own my own computer network integration firm specializing in high security.
I have a 2000 VN750 I purchased used in 2001 as my first bike. I really enjoy riding, though I don't get to ride every week. Houston drivers have no respect for us 2 wheeled motorists.
No real problems other than batteries, and that I attribute to extended periods without running the bike. I've replaced the battery twice. I've heard about design problems in the alternator that result in low output at low RPM, so I'll be reading more about that.
I also have a lot of chrome plated fasteners that are rusting. Odd.
I'm looking forward to learning a lot here.

I wax my chrome. I have a 2000 purchased in 1999. You have higher humidity levels, and may even be getting some salt in the air. That's my guess. Oh, and smog will get ya too. I guess it depends on which side of Houston you're on (wind direction)
As long as your battery is a Maintenance Free battery, you should be OK. Those batteries that you have to check water levels on are a big no-no for our bikes, unless they are original Yuasa batteries. Another problem you'll discover if you have a wet battery is that it is hard to start when the engine is warm. Lot's of cranking and backfiring, but it just doesn't start (a rolling start will get it going, though). Oh, and get a battery tender. $20 at WalMart.
Make sure you read the Vulcan Verses (http://www.vn750.com/forum/forumdisplay.php?f=36). Almost all of your questions can be answered there. It's a compilation of knowledge.

Thanks for the tips. I've already started reading the Vulcan Verses. It's great when others will share their experience. I'll do the same.
First is the MF battery and some voltage measurements at various RPMs. Although I can pull a wrench with the best of them, I don't look forward to a stator chageout and pulling the engine. All the batteries I've purchased have been OEM from the dealer. I have 2 tenders. One is solar powered. Both keep the battery topped up OK.
Haven't tried chrome polish on rusty fasteners, but my guess is that it won't do much. Rust is probably underneath. Bike is garaged 24 x 7.

I come from Houston, but I live in the Permian Basin now. Wouldn't dream of ever moving back. You do have salt in the air there. It settles on everything, every morning with the dew. It builds up over time and eats clean metal like crazy.
Welcome. I'm just starting myself. I have to bring mine back from the dead before I can ever ride it.

Welcome Texas Cruiser! Another Texan here. I bought mine from a guy who had just moved to Houston from Oklahoma and was just plain scared to ride it there!
Sure! I'm up for an Iron Butt ride. My 11 mile ride to work this morning turned into a 35 mile trip since I left early, I just did some riding in the nice cool morning temps.
