New rider, 2001 Vulcan 750 bought a week ago. Still tentative but hoping to get comfy enough on the ride to enjoy it. Already a 170 mile group ride and my wife and I are planning on taking a 90 mile trip on Friday.

Want to say Hi and I love this forum format. I think it will get wonderfully crowded in here!

I tease a little  There are a lot of new people lately and it is difficult to keep up with who's who, so here I go....

1986 VN750 bought in 2002, First bike after 28 year absence. Previous Bikes - 50CC Minibike, 1968 Honda 350 Scrambler sold in 1971, 1971 650 Yamaha sold in 1973. Took MSF beginner's course as a refresher. Would recommend this course as a must for new and returning riders.

My youngest son is going into his second year of college while my oldest son just graduated from University. My daughter has been married for four years and has provided my first grandson who is just turning 8 months.

Slowly working on adding personal touches to the bike. Air horns, 20 watt driving lamps, hard tail case, ear shave with K & N's and rejetting, pilot 45 and main jets 160 with two slims on needle. Have replaced fork seals, and lubed all bearings. Have added a power relay to run bike after ignition switch problems with the wife on the back. She did not appreciate having the Bike stop in the middle of the street with a truck bearing down on us. Still working on getting her back on the bike.

I ride every day unless it is raining when I have to leave. Last year rode until Dec 24th. These bikes are a joy to ride.

You all know my story!!!

Heck yeah we do bro!

Been riding since I was 8. I started with my grandfather and when I was 26 was given the same motorcyle I first started riding. It was a 83 SuzukiGS 650 GLD. Awesome bike. Sold it and bought a Vulcan 750 in December of 2002. I get the name "Woo Hoo" from when I worked in a bar. Love to make folks laugh and feel good. I am 28 and Married. Worked for 10 years at Nissan/Infiniti Dealerships and did 3 1/2 and a Dodge dealership. Worked my way up to Assistant Manager and Infiniti Internet Parts Consultant. Decided to quit and go back to school. Major is Business with a Minor in Computer Science. Ultimate goal is back into Nissan Motor Corporation in the Coroporate Office or into Law Enforcement. Well see what happens. Like I said before, love making new friends and making folks laugh. You might see me up on the stage one day doing stand up. Life is full of opportunites. Peace Love Dove Baby!! Lets Ride!

Hello Fellow Kawasakians.... Viking here.

Real name Roy from Eastern PA. Been riding bikes now for about 8 years. Lucked into my first bike at an auto auction. It was an 81 KZ440 for $200 bucks. Drove that for 6 years till I said "Enough, I need something with style!!!" Well maybe not those exact words but close. I started looking and ended up trying to decide between the 800 and the 750. Well I picked the 750 for its Mag wheels and the self adjusting lifters and the shaft drive and its guages up on the handlebars etc....... I am not dissapointed with the decision. It is a real nice bike.

I am a member of ABATE of PA and also a member of the South Central Vulcan Riders Association.

I am married and my wife is expecting our first child any day now. God it is hectic here. Don't get to ride as much as I would like with the baby on the way. (wife gets jealous I spend more time with the bike then with her but you know how that is)

I have been working for Goodyear Tire and Rubber co for the last 4 years. Started out as a delivery driver and worked my way up to the warehouse supervisor for the Wholesale warehouse in Allentown.

I have learned alot from all you fine people here and the Yahoo 7xx group. You are a great bunch of people and am happy I found this online home.

Great deal guys,
I am Beavis, I am 31 years old and live in west TN.
Have been a vn750 member for a few months now, as I have only had my bike for a few months. I have been riding for around a year or so, (got first bike last summer) my wife wanted to ride, so I found a honda vtr 250 (wrecked and not running well) and fixer er up to learn on (for her too) and turned out I was the one who really really liked it, so I practiced hard (riding in wierd ways that would make bystanders think I had some sort of mental issue, like doing figure eights in the highway, stopping hard as possible, etc... and doing pretty good now. Finally got my wife on the 250 after getting the VN750 and threatening to sell the honda. We went on a 200 mile ride today and I am impressed she made it as well as she did, so I am happy!!

I draw my answers to my bike broblems from my experience wrenching cars, I find that they have a lot in common and most mechanical bike troubles have a similar counterpart on the new systems on todays cars.

I try hard to help fellow members should I see any trouble I may find answers to. I also appreciate all the help I get when I ask for some!!!!

Thanks,
Beavis

I am a 40 yo who got tired of hearing from my hubby that we would get a bike someday & went out & bought one of my own in March ("Sammie Jo", VN99). I had ridden dirt bikes as a teen but not cruisers & quickly learned that you have to slow down when you come off of pavement on to dirt....Ouch!

My bike is my relief from my stressful working position and gets ridden just about every day when she is able and at home. She is being painted right now & it is killing me not having her to ride and Calgon just ain't quite taking me away! We live in N FL & we love meeting new people so if you ever get by this way we have plenty of room...my husband sayes that we have company instead of children. :-)

This group of people have been wonderful. Going to KY Lake & meeting some of you is the highlight of my summer....can't wait!!

Hi everyone! I am Faith or "Talie", or "Hey You" , and I used to participate in the Yahoo VN750 group. I haven't been riding very long. I got my first bike this spring, a '94 Vulcan 750 named "Surak". I taught myself to ride on the back roads around my farm here in western Pennsylvania, then took the MSF course which I finished on June 17th to get my license to ride. We'll see where it goes from here!
Personal stuff, I'm 31, and I have three boys who are 12, 12 and 14 years old. I was married for 9 years. He (and his brother) died in a plane crash July 1, 2000. I am an English major at a local university where I'm a Junior now. I have 50 acres of woods and weeds in Clarion County, PA but the only animals I have now are my kids, my dogs and a handful of kitty cats. I'm into reading and writing, poetry, guns, photography, travel, horses, history, hiking and biking among many other things.
I've met some really great people through the VN750 site on Yahoo, and am looking forward to meeting more and learning more about these bikes and the bikers who love them!
Anyone who wants to do so can add me on Yahoo messenger where I go by the handle "taliehart".

Hey Viking - not to steal away from the 750 board, but check out the NEVROC board sometime: http://autos.groups.yahoo.com/group/ne_vroc/ just cause there's VROCers gathering-up in Portland, PA just about every weekend for rides, and its what.... only ~20-30 min for you up 512, eh? I'm usually the only 750 in the pack (Joe Agro doesn't come into PA 'cause the roads are too 'Sweet' :-P ) Met Red Baron up in Hancock, NY a few weeks back (we should do that again, eh?), rode with Rich DiFiore along with Foggy last summer, met Ken Eng & a few others who's names I've forgotten for the time..... you're deffinately in a region rich with VROCers and a few 750s here and there. Hope to catch ya around! I think there's something cooking out of P'Burg, NJ for next Sat if you're interested.

My intro: Bought the 750 in 2000 new, got 22k on her & no complaints. Nuff said

Hello Everyone,

My name is Steve Fall and I live in Parsons, TN. I have been divorced for over 4 years. My 3 kids (Girl 14 and boys 11 & 8) have lived with me for more than a year and a half. I work as a Firefighter/EMT on the Fire Dept. at the Milan Arsenal.

My mother wouldn't let me have a bike growing up :( but in 2002 I finally had the money, the want and found the right bike all at the same time. I bought a 83 Yamaha 650. It was good bike...but I never gave it that complete inspection as I meant to. I ended up burning a piston out on it after a couple of months. A friend of mine and myself...with the help a group similar to this one rebuilt the engine and got it running. But I never felt it was 100% and never had it in ridding condintion...but I missed ridding even though I had only had a short time. So with my tax refund this year I said I can fix the Yamaha or I can use that money for a down payment on a new one. So I went shopping for new bike. I was actually looking for another Yamaha...but saw this 2004 Vulcan 750 across the showroom floor...I swear it called to me. :) I was in love and have enjoyed riding it ever since.

I look forward to meeting people on here and learing more about my bike and riding. Feel free to contact me on here or any of the other ways on my profile. Still working on a name for my bike...

My name is Bob Chin. 39 yrs on this planet. Married with one daughter, and live in the Chicago area. I work in supply chain for a power tool manufacturer. The job sucks because my bosses (yes plural) are idiots, but it pays the bills for now.

My therapy is a 95 VN750. I've been a member of the yahoo group since Feb 2K3. I've always wanted to ride since I was in grade school, but didn't start until 2001 after my parents moved to California (i.e. they were against me getting a bike). But I need no reason not to fulfill my desire to ride anymore. I still had to convice my Wife, so I took the MSF course and I ride conservatively. She's guarded, but optimistic that I can complete the ride in one piece every time I go out. Once my daughter is old enough, my Wife will join me on some rides. My dreaml is to take a few weeks off and tour the continent on a motorcycle with her when I'm older.

Bike is basically stock, with a few modifications. FS saddlebag brackets, smartcircuit voltage dummy light, Westco MF battery, Goodridge SS braided brakelines, relocated rectifier to passenger peg. Adding to the project list, fusing the stator and lubing the swingarm. I did give my bike a name, Sybil, due to her multiple personalities (left me stranded a few times), but she's been more reliable lately.

I'm being objective when I state that our VN750s are a great first bike. She's light, fast, and nimble. Yeah, accessories are hard to come by, but I think a lot of creative modifications can overcome the deficits. It's actually fun to figure out how to juryrig (sp?) a situation, and one learns a hell of a lot in a short period of time. The knowledge and creative information flowing in our group is second to none, and I'm proud to be a part of it.

I hope to make it out to KY lake this year. If not, then in crossing.

Hello everyone. I've been lurking around on the Yahoo VN750 forums since May 2003 when I purchased my own VN750, '94 model with 5Kmi. I've had my license to ride since '92, but hadn't ridden from '93 or so until just last year. It's nice to pick up the fun again.

I'm 34, divorced and have 2 children, 10 and 11. I live in Charleston, WV and ride as much as possible, weather permitting. (Geez! I'm beginning to think that WV has become an east cost Seattle with all the rain this year and last.)

My Yahoo and AIM handle is countryboysurfin, so gimme a shout if you see me around.

Hello All,
I joined up a bit ago. Still on the Yahoo group also.
I started on two wheels as a kid on a paratrooper's bicycle. Wore it out in two years and inherited my brother's Scwhinn. At fourteen took over the Cushman scooter, and crashed that one into the back of a moving van. Than had a Whizzer, a two stroke two cylinder mounted in a bicycle frame. Would top out about 40 MPH and had only the coaster brake. Wore that one out. Jobs and college, then the US Navy, put riding on the back burner for a while. After getting married and buying a home, scraped together a couple of bucks andHad a Montgomery Ward (Benelli ?) 125 cc two stoke single street bike, then a 350 4 stoke single, also from MW. They were selling them really cheap, trying to get out of the MC business. Later got a really clapped out but still usable dirt bike, and wore that one out also. Was finally able to get a 1976 Yamaha XT500, and eventually converted it to street mode. After I sold that one, I only rode other peoples' bikes on rare occasions. Last year, I decided that I would get back into it after 25 + years of not owning a bike. Found a 1997 LS650 Savage, figuring I would be less likely to kill myself on and less likely to drop a less powerfull, lighter bike, and it was a cheap way to find out if I could still do it. Got my learners permit, took the MSF course the weekend of hurricane Isabel (and passed). After 9,000 miles on the Savage, this spring I decided it was time to move up, saw Rusty sitting by the side of the road with a for sale sign on her, and bought her. Found the VN750 group, and it's been great. Just rode her to Bethany Beach and back, with exploring some Delaware roads in between.
I'm 68, married 42 years, two daughters, three gandaughters. I'm hopelessly outnumbered and completely surrounded by beautiful, intelligent, independent and sassy women, and I wouldn't have it any other way.
I've been working in the computer field since 1961. When I first started, some computers still used vacuum tubes. My cell phone is more powefull than some of the stuff that I worked on back then.
Currently I work for Black & Decker (you've probably heard of them) as a Unix System Administrator. I will be retiring (finally) at the end of July, and hope to start planning some rides to visit some of the members of the VN750 clan that don't live too far away.
Hope I didn't bore you, this did get a bit long.
Ride safe,
Dennis in MD

Hello all,

My Vulcan is a mid-life crisis present to myself. I alway wanted a bike since my early 20's but fate and life have a habit of getting in the way. I like to modify just about anything I get my hands on to fit my personal style. My scoot is no exception. Lots of homemade mods. Most people either laugh at or shake their heads at my bike. I made a website to document my efforts to share with the other 750 riders. I'm jealous of the guys (and gals) downsouth who have longer quality time with their scoots and live close enough to each other to have get-togethers. But then again I have other responsibilities that take priority. Married 20+ years with rug-rats so they take up most of my time. Wouldn't have it any other way.

My one word of advice: Check your drive shaft splines NOW!!

Pet peeve: Only get 5-6 good months of ride time up here in Maine.

My name is Chris, friends call me Spur. I rode bulls for 25 years and have een married 20 and some change years. My son and I have a fairly sucessful hunting website, www.CameronOutdoors.com, and most of my time is spent bowhunting and being a dad to two kids. I raced motorcross in highschool and had a couple bikes, but never really was to excited about them because I was busy doing other things. Now at 43 years old I have a great desire to ride and I am probably going to walk out of the local Kaw dealership with an 04 Vulcan 750 with in a week. This is a great site and I thank yall for the comment on my thread about the 750. I live in Texas so I can ride about 10 months out of the year. I work at a prison and the ride there is about 36 miles from my house....all beautiful paved "back county roads".....this bike will be perfect for me. Look forward to learning more from yall!!

All right! I finally made it to the new board, not bad for a guy who is just a couple steps above usuing a note pad, a #2 pencil and an abicus.

Started riding when I was a junior in High School 32 years ago and then gave it up around my junior year in college. Got a mid-life crisis in the spring of 2003 that sports cars didn't cure, so I thought I had a choice of a motorcycle or a 22 year-old goldigger girlfriend. The motorcycle won out (and probably saved me tons of money.) I decided on a used bike, and liked everything I was reading about the Vulcan 750, so I went ahead and purchased a '93 with about 9,600 miles on it. One of my better moves in life!!!

I am also glad I found the Yahoo group and now this forum and of course am honored to be a member with the rest of you.......

I think all of you know my story too, but for those who wish to torture themselves again...

Two years ago, a friend and I decided to do things out of our "norm". We took a spur of the moment road trip, got tattoos and dared each other to take the MSF course. Both of us had ridden as passengers, but not very much, and had no desire to do any more than that. Within a month, we each had a bike.

I bought an 03 model right off the showroom floor, figuring with my lack of mechanical knowledge, it would be better to have new. I only had a couple months of riding time that first year, but managed to put on a couple thousand miles. The following summer, I took a trip around Lake Superior with the Wolf's Head Rally gang... a trip I HIGHLY recommend to all. That gave me a boost of confidence, and put me in touch with some really great people.

This year, I am back in school full time and could not take the week that trip requires, so I chose instead to go to Boscobel as my "big trip" of the summer. Met quite a few fellow VROCers and had a blast. Long story, kept quiet, the nickname "Sweet Sausage" came about. And, it whet my appetite for a longer trip. So, I'll be travelling along the Mississippi River for 8 days in August (www.geocities.com/fritz1215)

Other statistics... 32, single, no kids, one cat, many jobs, wacky sense of humor. End of story ;-)

>>Come on, out with the nick name story, I'm sure we'll get a kick out of it :-) <<

It's actually not that exciting, LOL. There is a Boscobel yahoo group, and just before the trip happened, people were starting to get a bit stir-crazy to say the least. Well, someone said something about having "Leinenkugel" beer on hand, another mentioned that someone at her work thought "Leinenkugel" was a sausage. Then the topic began about beer and sausage, and I, with my big mouth, piped in "I'll take the sausage."
At some point something about kids being allowed on the trip came up, and someone else mentioned it depends on how big the kid is... my big mouth, once again piped up, "I'll be the judge of size." Then the conversation just got raunchier and raunchier the closer it came to the trip, LOL.

Well, as soon as I arrived in Boscobel, Black Chrome, one of the "old-timers" immediately presented me with a Slim Jim, and proceeded to do so every single time he ran into me. (I came home with about a dozen of those damn things... I don't even like them!!)
Warthog soon jumped in saying he had a sausage for me that, what it lacked in length, it made up for in girth... and truly, it did, (ha!) Pretty soon word got around that I was "getting my sausage" on a regular basis, and people just started calling me that.

So. There. Long story told. ;-)

Great story, truely great. That is just how a long term nickname gets started, something simple, something silly. And something that can be shared in mixed company without to many red faces!

The DJ there took notice of me as I was nervous being there and he wanted to further my embarrasment. He would call attention to me, and refer to me as "Beavis" because of the way I looked at him when he said something about me. I would not let him get me going though and finally started using the attention he gave me to my advantage as it were. Finally I was so immune to his comments and jokes, He had me come see him, and we became friends. I still played the part of the joker as it were, as we would have planned to do something funny on the dance floor, of cource me being "unaware" of it of cource. my popularity grew emencly by this, and pretty soon I couldnt even go out in public without somebody saying across the store-Theres Beavis!

the guys sympathised in private and said things like "Why do you let him say things like that". I would reply, It is hard to be made to dance with those beautiful ladies while being a butt of his jokes and have them spend time with me due to being the, "cool guy" I really shouldnt let him get away with that.........

anyway, after that I came to work in the club as the KJ. This was a fun gig that paid more than my day job and I had fun at the same time. Also met my wife while doing that job. We are happily married now for 5 years, and I do not regret being called attention to now for sure. It also helped me get over my shyness. now I can get in front of a big group on a stage and do whatever without fear.

Now nobody really knows me much in public anymore, being I dont work in clubs anymore, marriage and all, not out as much, but there is is, the story behind the nickname.

Hey all...I just found this site today. I am new to bikes (riding and wrenching)and I am trying to learn as much as I can about this bike as fast as I can...

I just bought my 1993 VN750 a few weeks back. I got what I thought was a pretty good deal, but have subsequently realized that I inherited someone else's problem child. I've spent more time with grease up to my elbows on this thing than I have riding it (I've only logged about ~40 miles so far).

I have already rebuilt my first carburetor, replaced all the fluids (some twice), lubed and adjusted my cables, and about 200 other minor fixes.

I am currently working out a problem with hard starts that I now think is an ignition problem. I plan on having to change out the R/R and stator, which means I will also be completing my first complete engine removal in the upcoming months.

I'll be d*mned if I am going to pay someone else to do any work on this thing...so, hopefully with the help of some of you fine folks, I'll figure out a way to get through this nonsense and actually get to RIDE this thing.

I think that's about it for me! See you around...

No, not yet. :( It's next on my list though. I've been busy intalling new fork oil seals. Once I get that sorted out, I'll place an order for one when I order my new tires. All good things to those who wait...eh?

Welcome to the Family Bishop. You've come to the right place, and from the sounds of it, you have already done a lot on your bike on your own.

If you are going to replace the stator, you might want to consider the TOC (James Larson) generator cover mod that will allow you to change the stator in the future without an engine pull. Engine pull is required to put the modified cover on. I just did this. (www.tocmanufacturing.com) I'm with you, I'd rather learn to do the job myself, and know that it was done right than to pay someone and not know.

If you can describe your hard start problem, we might be able to help you with that.

While you are doing your maintenance you might want to check and lube your rear splines with moly paste (honda molly 60 is good and easy to get), if you have not already done this.

Hello and welcome Bishop.

Hoot here. There are a lot of things to do before doing a stator or R&R change out. We have discovered that some of the trouble comes from very poor grounding of the entire system. I also ride a '93 (see my sig line for homepage).

Try improving the grounding. Are there tips for this in this group yet? Research research research.

Good luck. If you need more info some of the wiser folks around here can give you specifics.

Hi all: I've been around on the yahoo group, but now book marked this site too.

I bought a 94 VN750 california bike, 13k miles and had been sitting for 3 years. Cost $800. Think I got a deal. Tank is rusted. Had someone etch it, but I think I still need to get the POR15 products and seal it. Working on getting the carbs off and cleaned up. I hope to have running by mid Sept., just in time for some good 90 degree riding weather.

I see your reference to the Por 15 product. While I have used the Kreem before, (with decent results) I have seen highly reccomended on the KZRIDER.COM site, this Por 15. I would have tried it, but couldn't find it locally and at the time could not order any.

Good Luck and let us know the process and the results you have.

Interesting. I'm going to post a thread regarding this in the electrical forum and see where it goes. Up to this point, I had not heard anything about the grounding system being weak...then again...I've only been looking into it for a short time.

Thanks for the tip!

The POR15, I've heard a lot of good things and gone to their website and the instructions look easy enough. I'm just ordering through their site. I'll keep everyone posted on the outcome.

I'm ready to ride.

Hello everybody. My name is CAT TRACKER. I'm 48 and married with one son who is almost 16. I was a Kentucky State Park Ranger at one of Kentucky's state resort parks for about 13 years. I'm retired now and ready to ride. I'm not much into the long distance riding since I consider myself a ROOKIE on this thing. Okay...here's the lowdown. I've put 3,000 miles on my '95 Vulvan 750 and I'm pretty much 'solo' when I ride. The bike has 4600 miles on it currently. PINK FLOYD is my favorite group but I don't listen to them when I ride or I'd WRECK while glancing off into the sunset!!!! You know..."Lost in thought...and lost in time...while I pondered on this dangerous and irresistable pasttime". ;-)
Well..I live down here in the western portion of Kentucky but I'm from the hills of the EASTERN part of the state. Hazard, to be exact. I love it here tho...been here about 20 years. Met a few of the members of this board at the Kentucky Lake meet by CHANCE. Glad I did. Hope to stay active here and LEARN from you people. My thanks to you all for your hospitality at this site.

Hello everyone,

Call me "Wall". I live in Norcross, GA (suburb of Atlanta). At the end of July I bought a new 2004 VN 750. What a fantastic machine! I've only put a little over 600 miles on it so far, but I expect to put on a lot more in the coming months. I've been riding bikes since 1976, but haven't racked up a lot of milage in recent years as I worked in Saudi Arabia for 21 of the last 23 years. I took early retirement from my work there at the end of April and am now ready to ride.

I would like to thank the creators of this site for putting this together. This is by far the most informative place for the VN 750 that I've been able to find. Also, there seems to be a really nice and caring membership here. I hope to see some of you out on the road someday.

My wife Wynona ((32) who I have been married to for 14 years) and I have two girls: Ashley age 5 and Bethany age 2. I have ridden motorcycles off (more off then on) and on most of my life. I got my '86 Vulcan last year when I and my father joined ranks (Dads money, my labor) to fix the bike after my brother had wrecked it in '84. Alot of parts and money have been put into it to getting running again but I haven't been able to ride it as much as I would like, since I am currently remodeling the house we are going to move to.

Welcome, and I have the 700 here as well as my wifes bike, she loves it and rides with me when she can. It seems to be areally well built bike and has withstood the years well. I have some carb issues causing it to have low power, compared to my 750, but hopefully that will be resoved soon with the help of Flemdog, who is sending me his old carbs for me to clean up and try, as I think somebody botched the rebuild on mine and I just want to start with a clean slate...and some dirty carbs, lol.
nice bike though. A GOOD choice.

Hello everyone. Name is Bill. I'm a 51 year-old photographer, Mac computer geek, graphic designer, writer, corporate lick-spittle, toady and now, the proud owner of a 2002 VN750 with 1,700 miles--100 of which are MY miles. I had never sat on a motorcycle until the day I reported to the Motorcycle Safety Course. In retrospect, I wish I had waited until I had a few thousand miles under my belt.
A couple of riders in my department have "adopted" me and are helping me to conquer my fear of striking the asphalt at 60 or 3000 mph and sanding my body away until nothing is left except the top of my head. Not to mention all the other really hard things flying around out there.
When I got the bug to buy a motorcycle, I researched the internet and after looking at all the other offerings out there, I decided I couldn't afford a Harley, didn't want a bike that was a Harley wanna-be. My opinion is that feature for feature the VN750 was the only choice. I've lurked on all the forums, read most of the posts and man do I have questions.
The previous owner of my bike removed the goat's belly, added a Mustang seat, bags and a Kawasaki fairing. I'm adding Kuryakyn ISO grips (getting the golf grip tape tomorrow) and the girlfriend gave me a Protac back for Christmas. Out for now.

Sure is nice to fill her up on $5 or less.

Welcome Rock. Hope you enjoy the bike as much as we do. Did you get a maintenance free battery with the deal? If not, look into getting a Westco in there soon. It takes care of a lot of problems that pop up later on and you don't have to keep taking that seat off to check battery levels then.

Post your Introductions here please, and welcome to the group :-)

My name is Ron Daise and I live in Osborne, Kansas. Just returned to riding in the Spring of 2002 when I bought a new Vulcan 750. My son rekindled my interest and he bought a new 2002 Mean Streak at the same time from the same dealer. This summer I turned the big 60 and celebrated early by riding to the Grand Canyon with two friends. No problems with any of the bikes on our 2200 mile trip. Thus far I have added to my bike a Comagination headlight modulator and brake flasher, National Cycle Plexistar 2 windshield, Kuryakyn grips and throttle bos, Fire and Steel luggage rack, and Vance and Hines Cruzer pipes (a little louder than I wanted, but cool), Mustang seat, a Bikers Friend saddlebag/backrest combination, and a Universal maintenance free battery.
Love sites like these so I can learn more about my bike. Not able to do the more mechanical things but I like to do what I can. Plan to buy saddlebags soon so I will be posting some inquiries shortly.
My first bike was a 1980 Yamaha Exciter 250 followed by a l985 Honda Nighthawk 450 which I sold in l994. Didn't do much highway riding with either bike but that is about all I do now and really love it. Can't believe I already have over 12,500 miles on the Vulcan. Never rode enough to ever replace a tire on either of my first two bikes. Wish I would have started sooner with the type of riding I am now doing.

RonRon,

My bags are 13.5"w x 10.5"h x 5.5"d. They are Wille and Max and just found out recently they are model SB310A. I do have supports, got them from seller xvfinishes on eBay. I think he makes some specificaly for our bike now. He also makes some TS relocation brackets. Depending on the type of bags you get you may want them too. I haven't moved, mine but thinking about. Some have made their own brackets, or moved them to the taillight housing (what I am thinking of) or other solutions.

Suggestion: New member or old member it does not matter. If you have a question, just ask it. Someone is sure to chime in with an opinion if nothing else. Also don't be discouraged if at first your question does not get any reply. A lot of posts come in daily to both forums, and this one is not checked as often. One other tip, make sure you use a good descriptive title, not just a "need help title" to your post.

Post your Introductions here please, and welcome to the group :-)Hi. I am Pat V. I will be buying my first bike this year, probably this month. I have taken the MSF course 7 years ago, and will re-take it in May. After some research, I have found that the 'best' first bike is in the mid range, and the VN 750 fits me best and has what I want on it. I will be looking at a used one (2004, < 2000 miles on it) Friday 2-11-05. I plan to have it looked at by a Kawasaki shop befor buying it. Any suggestions on what I need to pay attention to in general and in particular to this bike, would be very much wellcomed. Thank you. Pat

Hi Pat,

a 2004 with less than 2000 miles should be pretty much mint. Have the owner lift the seat and check the battery compartment over. The bike ships stock with a wet cell battery which can cause damage if it leaks. Look the bike over. Bent brake or clutch levers are a sign it has been dropped. I can't think of much else, the bike is practically brand new and should look it.

Thanks for the reply. I went ahead and got the bike. I like the way it rides. I want to put an engine guard on the bike that extends past the pegs and gear shift lever. If anyone could tell me which model does that and where I can get them, that would be great. Thanks, Pat.

I've had a few other bikes before, a range of 500 and 750. Mostly road bikes. This is my first cruiser and I love it! It is so comfortable to ride. I'm still getting used to riding it. It is bigger and heavier than my previous one (a Kawasaki EX 500), but it doesn't feel too heavy on the road.

There are two things that have surprised me with the bike. First, it does accelerate well, but it's so noisy from the mufflers in full acceleration. Is that the way they are designed? I wish it was a bit quieter. Second is that it handles so well. A few weeks ago, I went on a ride with a friend who has a sports touring bike. His bike didn't turn corners a well as the VN750! I was surprised, considering that this is a cruiser.

I have had plenty of fun with the bike already. A nice change from the old one.

Chances are if the exhaust are noisy they aren't stock. Most after market pipies are louder than stock sine the goat's belly or pre-exhaust chamber uner the bike is removed when you add after market exhaust. Cobras are probably the loudest

Hi guys. My name is Rob and I'm from the UK. I have had an unlucky start to my time with the VN750. It's an '86 with 23,000 miles on the clock. It had been off the road for a while so I had to pick it up in a van. Got it home, had it serviced and rode it once. Then it cut out and I was told the engine was shot and I'm now having to shell out money for a new engine and someone to fit it as I don't know a lot about motorcycles in general. I hope to have it on the road by the end of the week - fingers crossed!!!!!!

Hey everyone. Long time rider and long time VN750 owner here. I have a '91 VN750 that I bought used in '98 and I've been riding it ever since.

Just recently I've decided to do some customizations (saddle bags, highway pegs, seat upgrades, etc) because I just can't part with it!

Maybe I'll get that new bike when the kids finally get out of school...

Mike.

My name is Russ. I am 34, married, have 2 kids, and I live in Norcross, GA, just north of Atlanta.

I bought a '94 vulcan 750 about a year ago. It has about 18,000 miles on it now, only had 12,000 when I bought it. This is my first bike since riding dirt bikes as a kid, and I really love it. I just found this group a few weeks ago (I've been lurking for a while) and I have to say you have a great site. I've learned a lot about the 750. I had been on the vroc page a lot, but they don't talk about 750's much.

My bike is a '94, teal and black, and has the sissy bar, saddle bags, and a F&I windshield. I de-goated it a while back, but was never happy with the sound, so I re-goated. I never rejetted since I didn't like the sound. It sounds pretty good now (since I had drilled all of the extra holes trying to make the de-goat sound better).

I am waiting for my new K&N oem replacement air filters, and wonder if I will need to rejet the carbs (factory 1.0 or 1.1 carb kits)http://66.47.68.116/products/carb.html
Has anyone here gone with the K&N oem replacements keeping stock exhaust? Did you need to rejet?

Thanks,

Russ

Russ,

Welcome to the group. I also live in Norcross, so we are close neighbors. My bike is a 2004 VN750. I've put about 4,500 miles on mine since I got it last August. Sorry I can't help you with your air filter question. But, if you would like another VN750 biker to go on a ride with sometime, get in touch with me. I check this forum almost every day, so if you send me a private message through the forum, I'll get back to you pretty quick with my e-mail address and phone number.

Hey all. My name is John and I live outside of Peoria, IL. I have a 85 vn700 that I got a few years back with 3000 miles on it. Had a 86 vn750 given to me with a bad stator/rotor. Used the carbs, aftermarket pipes and some odds and ends off the 86 to get the 85 running... and then naturally the stator/rotor went out in the 85 too. That was, um, NOT FUN to fix. I invented new words that week! I previously owned a 81 Suzuki GS750, a 74 Honda XL100 and a 81 KDX175. I am 34 and work for the evil empire of Caterpillar- my bike is what "saves" me. Now it has 14000 miles, looks bad, run excellent and is a total blast to ride. This forum is great as is the Yahoo one and I have marbeled (sp?) already and am getting ready to install the HD (eww) exhaust manifold gaskets as I'm still backfiring. And from the noise probably will be getting into the ACCT soon too. If ya can't tell, I type as random thoughts enter my head, so I get sidetracked! I'll offer any help I can and I'll sure use all of yours! Thanks.

Hello Group, I’m Bob a new rider to the Vulcan world, I bought my 05 750 almost two months ago and been loving it every since. Prior to her, I road a Honda 750 in Goldsboro, NC many years ago, so that’s were I got the itch for riding. I really enjoy riding as it’s my release from the world. I’m 42, married with 4 lovely kids; I live in Oregon and work in a prison (babysitting male inmates) lol, so I guess you could say I needed a release mechanism. I retired from the Military (USAF) after 20 years of service, and this was my retirement present (besides the twins), long story. I’ve installed a National Cycle Plexifairing 3 windshield after reviewing this forum and doing some research, talk about a difference. I also have recently purchased an engine guard (hasn’t arrived yet) will keep you posted. I would enjoy riding or hearing from anyone of the group.

Hey all , Im a 37 year old father of 2 that lives in the Washington , D.C. area and bought my 86 vn750 back in Sept. of 04 . Ran across this site a few months back and have been really impressed by all the great info here. I decided to lurk for a while and try to read as much as I could before coming out of the shadows. My bike has a shade over 15000 miles on it but as I suspected it has sat a lot in the outdoors during its life. Ive readjusted the throttle cables , replaced the front forks and fender, front brakes , front tire , rear tire and wheel , new clutch cable , new side covers, all new turn signals, rebuilt the starter , new starter cable ,new starter solenoid , flushed all the fluids etc.... Luckily the charging system seems to be functioning as advertised but Im planning on a r/r mod soon as well as the m/free battery upgrade and the infamous degoating project as I have procured a new in the box Jardine exhaust system. Ive been riding bikes since I was 14 but have taken the last ten years or so off due to the ridiculous traffic in this area but always knew I couldnt stay away forever. Ive had everything from a 250 enduro to an 80 cube Harley , ( I even had a 1977 750 Hondamatic ) but I must say this is as cool a little cruiser as Ive ever had. Im an insatiable tinkerer and love to hang out in my shop at night , drink beer , and take things apart and put em back together so what Ive done so far to this bike is probably just the tip of the iceberg. I look forward to contributing as much as possible to this forum as time goes by. But for now as I catch up on my learning curve I apreciate in advance all the help a site like this gives me. Safe riding all , aint nothin like two wheel ridin.

glad to have you, and you mention the bars, they are fully adjustable right down into your lap if you want them there....just remove the four black caps and you will find the adjuster screws, of course then you have to move clutch, brake, and all other junk to suit the changes....

A month ago I purchased a used 2003 VN750 in pristine condition with 3006 miles, a Vulcan windshield, a luggage rack, an extended warranty, a replacement sealed cell battery, and a completed 3000 mile maintenance. I have since added a passenger backrest and 800+ miles. I was originally planning on purchasing a new VN750, but the deal I found on this used one was just too good to pass up. Nice bike!

I lurked on this forum for a few weeks, and the vast quantity of information and links concerning the VN750 made my purchase an easy decision. Thanks to all who have contributed.

I've been riding for 25 years, and have previously owned a Honda CB100, a Kawasaki KZ400 and a Kawasaki 550 LTD.

I have enjoyed the information and interaction on this site.

I rode motorcycles only a few times many years ago. Approaching 50, I suddenly wanted to ride. The week after completing the m-cycle safety course last summer, I test drove 5 cycles, the 5th being the '92 Vulcan I purchased. I spend most of my ride time so far in the Wisconsin countyside. Took a trip last month from north of Milwaukee to Minneapolis. Time on the bike is very enjoyable. I sometimes refer to it as cycle-therapy. I hope to take a much longer trip sometime soon. I usually ride alone.

Married 20 years, with children. Former military. Hobbies include photography and outdoor activities.

Hello everyone,

My name is Gary, from the SF Bay Area. Been riding since I was a kid (I'm 53 now). I've owned various bikes since 1971 but took a 4 year break back in the mid 90's. Missed it, so in 99 I went out and bought my VN750 new. Only had it one month when I was broad-sided by a pickup. It was the first accident I'd ever had on a motorcycle. Took a year to recover but got right back on and I've been riding ever since. I've been lurking here off and on for some time so I thought it was time to jump on board.

Hi everyone, I am now an owner of a 03 VN750. I had a few previous posts with concerns on wether or not to get the bike. It has 1,800 and already had a ststor go. Anyway I bought it for $3,200 with a warranty until 04/07. It is in mint condition. I took it for a ride yesterday about 200 miles and the few stops we made for gas it did not want to restart. But after lunch when it had time to cool it started right up. Any thoughts? Well I really like it and only hope it behaves! Thanks for the great site, Megan

Megan,

Welcome to the group. I know you must be having some second thoughts about the bike you just bought, but it really is a great machine. There's a thread called "Engine Quits Suddenly" in the Technical Forum under General questions about the VN 750. There are a number of possible solutions to your particular problem discussed there. There may be some other threads that apply as well. Good luck.

I'm 36 years old and this is my first bike ( late bloomer I guess ), I look forward to putting a lot of kilometers on it when it comes back from the shop.

I want to put some Kury Iso grips with the throttle boss on but not sure how comfortable they are, anyone who has em please let me know what ya think, thanks.

Thats about it for now, keep your right hand cranked and talk to ya later.

Go for the Gold wing Kury Iso Grips because they are a little bit longer and you can move your hand out of the way of the throttle boss when needed.

Hi. Real name is Carol. I am a 41+plus tax school teacher who bought her first bike to stick it to OPEC. Not really, that was just my final excuse. I have been wanting to get a bike for several years and after much extensive research and comparing determined the VN750 was the best bike for the money. Besides, when I looked at it, it looked like what I thought a REAL bike should look like. I have been riding it for two weeks now and am setting up to take it in for it's first 600 mile checkup. Loving every minute of it. I love reading what everyone has to share and believe me it is put to good use. I'm still waiting on my bags and am looking into a shield, although I read someplace that it makes it more difficult to steer. I have headlight and taillight mod's being installed this week and thank you to who ever wrote about the problem at an intersection with the modulating headlight. That is very valuable information as that was where I mainly was going to use it.
OK, I tend to get a bit windy so I'll stop here for now. God bless everyone and safe happy riding to all.

Hiya,

I'm Ione (pronounced eye-o-knee) - 44/S/F living near Was. DC & originally from central coast, CA. Here's my story...

I'd been ridin' on back of my friend's m/c for about 2 years. I'd ridden dirt bikes as a kid, so I knew the basics of how & what & where, but riding his Shadow was not in the program. I'm sure everyone's seen that Tshirt "If you can read this, the b**ch fell off" (& other variations of that theme). Well, I had one that said "If you can read this, the b***rd won't let me drive".
It was a Monday in mid-June that I suddenly decided it was time to ditch that shirt & make it happen! I got online, found a location that offered the MD motorcycle safety course without a 9+ month waiting time... Tuesday I faxed in my registration for a mid-September class. Wednesday, they called me to inform me they couldn't read my drivers license & I needed to re-fax it. Thursday, I called them to let them know it was on its way... & by the way, anyone happen to drop out of the class for that evening??? Yes? I was on the road by 4PM. Four days later, I was takin' the riding & wriiten tests. The next day, Monday, I was down at the MVA getting my m/c license. The next weekend, I fell in love with a VN 750 and put half down on it. And that following Friday, I paid the balance & rode off into the sunset... OK, more like 4th of July rush hour traffic around the Baltimore beltway (can you say "foolish broad??)! It had 17K miles on it then. This last weekend, it turned 24K - need I say more??? LOL I'm hooked.

The VN 750 is the perfect starter bike. Although I'm already thinkin' "bigger", it's definitely a great bike for the interim. And it's good to have a group to turn to for mechanical advice or to share info with. If anyone lives around the DC area, look me up to go for a ride while the weather holds out. Meanwhile, I'm happy to be a part of this group - keep it 2 on de road, ya'll!!

Greets all.

My name is Mike, my handle is Strongbow.

Proud new owner of an '06 VN750 as of 3 weeks ago (the Saturday before a little lady named Rita visited the Texas coast). The bike's name, tentatively, is Ursula; the black and red color scheme reminds me of a black widow spider.

I'm getting back onto 2 wheels after about a 20 year hiatus, when I road a Honda CL100 to it's demise as a teenager. RIsing gas prices have made it too painful to drive my Expedition every day now, so I had to make a change.

I passed the MSF Beginner's course just about a month ago (passed all except "the box") and immediately took and passed the test to get my Class M endorsement.

After 3 weeks, I am finally getting over the jitters of riding the new bike on the highway and yesterday started to really enjoy it (and remember the joy I had on a bike as a kid).

In just the last hour of reviewing the messages here, I have already found several answers to questions about certain aspects of my bike and some nifty mod's that I should probably make. However, I see I need to learn a new vocabulary too; I have no idea what some of the articles are talking about (what is R/R, or Goat's Belly?).

Cheers,

Strongbow

My name is Stephen, my wife Marie and I took an MSF class after the bug got me in late 2003 to get a bike. I originally had a Honda QA-50 when I was a kid, and rode it until it would no longer carry me. My parents wouldn't let me get a bike at 16 unfortunately. It took 14 years, and now more than ever I wish I'd just gone out while in college and bought one.

We started out last year on smaller bikes, Ninja 250 for my wife... and a Buell Blast for myself. We sold the Ninja recently, it had a little over 3000 miles in the year we had it with the first 500 or so being from me breaking it in, and another 100 or so from me riding it once in a while. It was a fun little bike. The Blast has just rolled over 3400 miles as of today, I've got to put a new back tire on it, just waiting for it to come in.

We replaced Marie's Ninja with a Buell XB9R, and I bought a Vulcan 750 because it had all of the features I wanted and the looks of an 80's Power Cruiser. It was either the Vulcan 750 or a VMAX.. and I didn't think I was ready for a VMAX. :-)

Marie's put 1800 miles on the XB9R since she got it, and I've got about 1500 on the VN750 as I've been splitting miles between the Blast.. riding it about once a week (It's a fun little Thumper... and has a unique personality just like the VN750) and the VN750 the rest of the time.

I work in IT, have a degree in Graphic Design, and maintain a website at www.mrbun.com with some of my artwork (out of date, I wish I had time to put it all online, just can't bring myself to put more than small pen and ink drawings.. the paintings and large drawings from school remain in storage until such time as I get them out and photograph them), and a journal which is frequently and infrequently updated.

I came across VN750.com while researching the bike... and have remained a person sitting on the sidelines reading, researching, and benefiting from the wisdom and knowledge of the fine people on this site... I just started asking questions a bit ago... Anyway, figured I'd introduce myself. I'm glad to be here in your company. :-)

Hi Stephen, It's nice to meet you! This is a nice site and there is alot of good people and great info about the 750.

My wife and I recently bought 750's. She was learning to ride using my old 650 Yamaha and then she bought her own bike, a 94 750. I liked her's so much I went and bought a 91. I also ride a 1500 Classic Vulcan for long hauls.

Hope to see you here often.

Hello,

Name's Art. Took the MSF class a couple months ago. Just bought a 2006 vn750 last week after weeks of researching. Got a lot of good info from this group, thanx everyone. Love the bike.

I drive it 35 light traffic highway miles to work a few times a week. So far afraid for my life but loving it.

I had the bike "broke in" on the dyno at the dealership. After researching break in procedures I flipped a coin and decided to be a guinne pig for 50 bucks and supposedly not have to worry about break in procedures.

I just changed the oil and filter myself after 200 miles and put in Penzoil 10w40. At the 800 mile mark I plan on paying the 200 bucks for the dealer to check all regular stuff but I don't really want to spend the money. Should I do it myself? Changing oil is the extent of my mechanical experience.

Anyway, I'm happy to be a part of this group and thanks everyone for the information that was already provided and available here.

First thing you should do, buy youself a good battery. Stock batteries have a shelf life of about 6 months. Find a good maintenence free one, a Gel Cell if you can afford it.

Hi Everyone,

My name is Bob. I bought a 1994 VN750 in June after taking the motorcyle safety course. I haven't ridden for about 20 years. My last bike was a 1981 Suzuki GS850. I really loved that bike. But, the VN 750 looked perfect for re-entry and had all the features that I remembered I liked on the Suzuki. So far I am thrilled with the bike. Still smile everytime I climb on. I live in central Indiana. Haven't done much distance riding yet. Just purchased a windscreen but notice alot of buffeting. I really enjoy reading everyone's comments and you all are a tremendous resource with wonderful advice.

Will look forward to keeping up with all and getting to know everyone.

Thanks,
Bob

Hi Bob!

As for the wind buffeting...try adding lowers as that will remove the buffeting.

Have fun and be safe!

I've had my vn750 since I bought it new in '00. Since then, I've added an '04 Concours so the wife and I could take longer trips. I've been riding off and on since I was 14.

I'm a school teacher by profession (HS science) but am currently homeschooling our two kids.

Hello all. Just got back into riding again a couple of months ago. Purchased a 92 vulcan 750. We were going to get a bigger bike and my wife and I ride together but after I started looking at bikes she decided she didn't want to ride with me. She wanted her own. Now we both have vulcans. I have the 92 750 and she has a 94 500. We both love them. Think they are great. Now our only problem is having enough time to ride. It is our new obcession. I have been checking out the forum and have seem several great ideas.I look forward to sharing with you all.

Hey folks,

I've been hanging out in the Yahoo! Group and I think I've neglected to introduce myself over here.

I'm back in the motorcycle scene after too long of a hiatus. Ok, that's not really true, but I had a Honda Trail 70 and YZ-50 when I was a kid http://motorcityvroc.org/yabb/images/grin.gif and rode my dad's 1977 Triumph Bonnie a few times in between; enough to keep the jones goin'.

I'm the current owner of a well taken care of 1994 Vulcan 750; with an added bonus of having a Saddlemen seat already on it! I just added wide, chrome clutch and break levers and bullet bolts to my license plate - Christmas presents. I just purchased a River Road Sissybar Bag and have on order an OEM sissybar (which is taking forever).

I'm debating my next big purchase, but I'm leaning towards a turn-signal relocation kit that adds a dual filliment for turn/running/break lights.

Take care,
Scott

Hello sk8centilli, welcome to the group. I'm not one of the Administrators, just one of the members.

I joined this group back in September of 2004, but when I looked back through this thread, I notice that I neglected to introduce myself to the rest of the group. I've made a few posts here, and I try to check the postings daily. There's a lot of good information here, and it helps me do nearly all of my own work on my bikes. I haven't belonged to the Yahoo group since 2003.

I own 3 VN750's and my wife has 2 Marauder VN800's. So far, we've had enough bikes to keep us on the road year-around since 2001. Before that, we spent 25 years raising a family (no time or money for motorcycles), and before that I had a Honda SL350 and the wife's brother was into Harleys. We've both had the "motorcycle bug" all of our lives, and were finally able to really get into them. We've been turning about 13,000 miles per year on the bikes, until last year, when we only got about 8,000. We moved and remodeled our house, so we didn't get in as many long runs. We're going to try to do better this year.

Hello All, Kinbroke here real name Ian living in the southern counties of England. I have owned a VN 750 for the past five years having previously had a FJ 1200, GSX 750 Katana, CX650 custom and a few others. as you can tell i have had a few bikes however i am not one to maintain them, i let the shop do that. my only problem with the VN is that even after 5 years i still have to ride the bike with an erection as it is such a sexy bike (even the wife thinks so and i thought she was dead years ago). Good to know there are people out there who enjoys thier bikes as much as i do.
Be safe annd keep it upright.

Howdy...

I drive my VN750 everyday about 100 miles, roundtrip, to work. Does anyone have any PM issues or advice they could share with me? I'd like to know what problems I should look to avoid, driving 500+ miles a week. I've already put over 5k miles on it, replaced a coil, and a few odds and ends.

Thanks,

I'm riding an '01 750, and loving it. In my 14th month of ownership. Real glad I found this website. This is a great bike, but has the weak areas you'll read about here. I've got most of mine taken care of (not that I'd had any problems in these areas, it's just that I enjoy being proactive). so I figure I'll be enjoying my '01 for quite a while with normal maintenance. I just love the roll-on power t his bike has! Purrs like a kitten, and passes like a tiger!

hi everybody, im evelknievel from the uk, just thought id say hi. I have been riding motorbikes for about 2 years but i have only had a vulcan since august 2008 and i must say, i prefer the cruiser style of riding. I have lived in the uk all of my life and i am more than happy to see that other people like myself are enjoying a bike that is a work of art for style, comfort and fuel economy. It can only be the Kawasaki Vulcan 750. My vulcan is a 1986 model and has only got 10500 miles on the clock but i've put 1500 of them on it since august. Anyway, i'm gonna stop talking now before i start to bore you. If you would like to know more about myself or my vulcan don't hesitate to ask, i will be more than happy to tell you. Catch you later, evelknievel.

About time I said hey. So this thread is an old one? Me, myself, am not surprised. I started looking to learn to ride in 2007, took the safety course in Aug. 2008, bought my first ride in Oct. of 2008 , and been riding it on and off when weather permits(winters suck). I have a black with red '86 750. It had a little under 15,000 on the clock and it looks brand new. Only paid 1700 for it. Gonna get some cheap saddle bags at Farm and Home store (actual horse saddle bags that will actually work and $30!). Already has a windshield and tires will last me through the summer I hope. Go Cardinals and Steelers!!

Hello all. I just got a 97 Vulcan 800cc (according to title). Not my first bike (CBR and GSXR) but my first cruiser. I'll add pics soon. Got a couple questions on how to wire the rear turn signals. The bike didn't come with them so I got a pair and see where they mount, I just don't see where they wire up to. Any help would be much appreciated.

No problem Wolfie. When I first joined this board I was pretty new to computers and forums as well as riding. I answered a few stale dated threads too, and they havn`t thrown me out yet!

When I read your greeting, "Dobrii dyen ", it reminded me of an older Czeck lady (I think, east Europen somewhere anyway) that I met in the early `70s who taught me how to say "Hello" in her language. I don`t remember it exactly anymore, but as I recall it was pronounced something like "dobra denya" or "dovra denya". Am I even close I wonder? lol :)

Wolfie
09-06-2011, 01:47 PM
your Czech might be close...most Slavic languages have similarities, but are yet different as are dialects in Germany (ya, I speak German too) and in different regions of the US...example : the word "water" in NY. In NYC, its generally pronounced "woh-tuh"...in the Adirondacks, its "waater"...and thats just STATEWIDE. But your rememberance is close enough that any Slavic speaking person would understand. :smiley_th

Hey Wolfie, my ancestors immigrated to the US from Switzerland in 1860. They came from the German speaking mountain villages about 20 miles from Bern. Apparently the Anabaptist movement started in this area of the upper Rhine. My second cousin went back 20 or more years ago and found 7 of our ancestral villages. They speak an archaic dialect quite different from modern high German, but a cassette tape recording from relatives there was understood by friends in a religious communal group called Hutterites who live here in Alberta. They are similar to Mennonites or the Amish.

The root of my surname is Hirsch, which means "red buck" or "red deer" I am told. There is a red deer in Europe which weighs about #600, so it would be more like our elk than North American deer.

Wolfie
09-07-2011, 01:09 PM
different from modern high German...ahh, ja..."hochdeutch"...
We heve a Hutterite brethren right over the mountain from me here (200 ac)...wonderful folks !...and my cousin's husband died while climbing the Eiger....kleines welt, nein ?....
And yes, the deer there are more like elk, especially in Schwartzwald (Im dieing to go mushroom picking there !)...:smiley_th

Not sure how this introductions/new members thread ever got started in "The Goats Belly", because there is a "Newbie Checkin" forum. :)

What needs shining up stabbert? Paint, chrome, aluminum, or all the forementioned?
There is an old thread about polishing up the lower fork tubes (aluminum) starting with 400 grit wet and dry sandpaper, then 1000 grit w&d sandpaper and finishing with polish.

I will see if I can find it, as I just bought some buffing wheels and polish for my 6" grinder and one for a power drill too.
My lower fork tubes have some road rash from kicked up sand and gravel that needs to be polished out too.

Yes, from what I've heard and experienced with my vulcan you have yourself a gem of a bike. Good luck with it and your family... and you can go back and read a lot of the posts that this site's members replied to me with, they contain a lot of great information on initial maintenance, ect.
