Hello everone. Just came home with a 87' 750 Vulcan. Doesn't run now but will shortly. It has an ignition module problem. Please forgive the dumb questions I may ask in the future and I look forward to the Forums.:motorcycl

Welcome Mr. Diode! I have a friend that's a preacher-man in Louisville.

As to questions, let me point you to our great resource on our bikes quirks and mods. It's called Vulcan Verses and it's on the main forum page. Read it! Read as much as you can! It can save you many headaches later on.

Also, you need to check your drive splines as soon as possible. Fergy has written a procedure with pics. Turns out that many bikes don't have any lube in these places, and it's a cool grand to replace the unit. It's here:

If you have trouble starting the bike, especially when its hot, then you need the Maintenance Free battery. About $68 to $72.

Yours will be the first that I've heard about that has a bad IC igniter. How was this determined?

I have a Clymers service manual. I also have a DVM for testing. The chart for testing ohm values between pins showed way too much resistance between pins. Plus, It wont start, with plugs pulled and grounded it has weak spark. This bike has been neglected for many years, I believe the previous owner tried to jump start it with his car. Most likely incorrectly and maybe flashed the igniter. This one may be parted out if it gets too expensive to repair.

That seems to be done a lot - I see parted out bikes on eBay all the time.

Our charging systems are delicate, and are expensive to fix. Replacing the stator requires an engine pull, as you probably already know. In my case, I think when my bike got knocked over, the battery got some fluid knocked out of it. Eventually, I ran it out of all the fluid, tried jump starting it, drove it backfiring (flames, even!) until it wouldn't run on its battery. That weakened the regulator, which eventually shorted, and then took the stator with it. I got it all fixed up, but it still wouldn't start easily, and wouldn't start at all when hot - which I got on this forum and took the advice of the Vulcan Verses and got a maintenance free battery, which fixed everything. I've put over 1K miles on it this summer (work miles), and it runs great!

Welcome thediode! this is a good place to show up when you're wrenching on the 750. Lots of good info here and folks with lots of experience too!

Thanks for the welcome fergy. Looks like I may have to continue working on this beast. I fired it up last night after the battery charged completely. Other than exhaust leak in the front cyl no other problems except rusty chrome, corroded wheels, dirt and dust everywhere, and flat tires.
I see the same post every where about a gell cell battery being the fix for almost all VN750 problems. Think it will take care of the flat tires?:beerchug: Yes I have to aggree with cegodsey about the battery and hot starting problems. With the fan hooked into the hot side of the battery, once up to running temp the fan can come on after you park. It can run long enough to lower you battery low enough to fail to start. There was only a few tenths of battery voltage difference causing mine not to start. If the cranking volts were below 9.8vdc then not enough fire to start. I have a lot of wiring connections to clean and check before feeling confident to take this bike anywhere.:carryflag

Considering that you are finding corroded wiring, something else I would check is the voltage at the coils. Check battery voltage first, engine off, then check the voltage at the coil power wire with ignition on, bike not running. On my kz the coil power wire is red/yellow and the ground wire is black on one and green on the other. If you see a substantial drop off of voltage at the coil power, tracing that back might be interesting. There is a coil power mod that I've done on both kz's I've owned where you wire in a relay and use the old (red/yellow) coil power to trigger the relay, and power the coils directly from the battery with new wire. If you find the voltage low at the coils, let me know and I'll ask around to see if the coil mod is any different on the vn750.

Actually, the hot starting is a problem even if the fan doesn't come on. It's a really weird thing if you ever experience it. That typical scenario is that you start it up cold, drive to a gas station, get gas, then it won't start. Turns over, but nothing. Coast down a hill, pop the clutch, it starts right away.

Thats exactly what happened to me recently. Whats the fix ?

A fix that usually works is a maintenance free battery.
You have one of those, or the old fashioned wet cell?

What a fantastic job of describing driveshaft inspection/repair. I have never seen a better job of describing a mechanical procedure. I am 70 years old and have used a lot of repair manuals for cars , airplanes and other machinery. Thanks for your efforts and generosity.

Just purchased my 02 750 about 2 months ago and am trying to catch up on its needs, quircks, and habits.
