: Fluid Changes
KENNETH FORTUNE 08-03-2006, 05:29 PM Just Picked Up A 98 Vn 750. I Want To Chage All The Fluids Due To Not Knowing What Po Did To Bike. What Type Of Oil And Tran Fluids Are The Best To Use. Besides Lubing The Drive Shaft Splines Are There Any Other Maint Things I Should Do. Also Trying To Figure Out How To Get My Gauges Off. So I Can Clean Them Up. THEY Have A Little Rust. Wanted To Sand Them Down And Paint Them.
Thanks
Loran in Npvl IL 08-03-2006, 06:08 PM You should also do the brake fluid (one bottle of DOT 4 - do NOT use DOT 5).
See Fergys page on how to lube your drive splines: http://pages.tstar.net/~fergy/writeups/final_drive.html
I found out the hard way (took much more apart), 2 bolts hold on the entire guage cluster. The bolts are kind of blocked by wiring and near the top of the fork tubes.
Oil question is frowned upon on bike boards because everone has an OPIONION (not neccessarily facts). Use an oil that does NOT have energy conserving on that matches with the owners manual recommendations (10w-40, 15-w40, 20w-50, depending on your climate)
tankist 08-03-2006, 06:38 PM also just to make things clear (sorry, it didn't sound like you are aware of it)- on our bikes there is no separate fluids for engine and trasmission. its all one system flowing also through the clutch. that's why it is very important to get NON energy conserving oil or the cluth will start to slip. as far as brand there plenty of supporters for each one. ohh, and don't forget to order your filter from kawasaki in advance, it takes a bit of time to get it.
plenty of good documentation on any kind of service in Vulcan verses. good luck
cegodsey 08-03-2006, 07:17 PM Hey Kenneth, You Any Relation To Danield? He Has Been Known To Capitalize The First Letter Of Every Word. I Like The Style, But It Sure Slows Down My Typing Or I'd Use It All The Time.
Yeah, Make Sure You Read The Vulcan Verses, In The Main Forum. It Has All The Info You Need To Keep Your Bike Running Good.
whew! i just don't have the coordination it takes to type like that. back to my old style.

Welcome to the board Ken.
Some good info's been posted for ya so far, but no one's mentioned, the ring around the gauges (which I'm guessing is what's rusted on yours) isn't removable from the housing.
Another thing, be sure to check the battery. Many here suggest replacing wet cell with a maintenance~free one.
Also, add a couple dabs of silicone adhesive to the inside of the chrome swingarm caps. They're known to dissappear. While your at it, put some silicone on the trunk lock nut. The lock is another part that seems to vanish before ya know it (and ya don't want to go to the dealer for another one $$$$$$)
Enjoy your ride
cegodsey 08-04-2006, 04:01 AM Yeah, as tankist said, I'm a bit of a trouble maker. But I won't lead you down the wrong path for long.
Tankist - the funny thing about that bottom bolt was that I originally thought that was for draining the oil. Then my shop manual came in, and it said the side bolt. Wow, that really freaked me out! I was pretty sure I must have disconnected something, because why would they put a bolt underneath unless it was connected to something? Finally saw where it was just another drain, and boy was I relieved!
KENNETH FORTUNE 08-04-2006, 10:06 AM Would It Be Easier To Replace The Gauge Housing Or Mask The Gauge Off And Try Cleaning Them And Repainting Them That Way.

HERE'S (http://www.vn750.com/forum/showpost.php?p=11041&postcount=13) a post by Adam (aka BCJoker04) with a pic and write-up of his gauges painted black. Looks pretty good.
I've been debating painting the entire gauge housings flat or satin black myself.
KENNETH FORTUNE 08-05-2006, 12:03 AM Thanks For The Post I Was Actually Thing Of Doing Mine In Black To. I Think It Looks Good.
Sky Rider 08-05-2006, 08:55 PM One other thing I would recommend is as this is your first bike, that you take the Motorcycle Saftey Foundation's beginner rider course. You will not regret it and it may even save your life.
I really enjoyed the course I took and even if you've ridden for years, there is always something new to learn.
KENNETH FORTUNE 08-06-2006, 10:06 PM I Have Signed Up For The Class. But It Has About A 6 - 8 Week Wait List. But Alot Of People Have Talked Highly Of The Class.
