Hey all,

I've run into some starting trouble with my 750 and found this web-site. Looks informative so I joined. We'll see if I can fix it or if I have to rely on the mechanic.

Starting trouble? Battery. Probly. See Vulcan Verses.

Welcome Tex! Great place for information on our 750's. I'm guessing you're from Texas. Where bouts?

Now, about the starting problems... Tell us more and maybe someone here can help from experience.

Thanks for the greetings. I've been poking around in the Verses section for a bit today. I've got the MF battery. I've had that for a couple years and I just had the dealer do a load test on it yesterday. It's ok.

If I jump the bike from the truck it starts ok. And if I let the battery charge for a bit it'll start once or twice without a problem. So, I'm thinking it's the R/R or the stator.

For awhile I was having some trouble where it'd stall while riding. But she'd start right up either by poping the clutch if I was still rolling or if I was stopped she'd turn over. Looks like that finally gave out.

So, I'll give the R/R a test when I can. I hope that's the problem. The stator doesn't sound like any fun.

Fergy, I'm actually from PA.

I see. I'm sure you might have found the electrosport fault finding chart, but if not, here's the link to it: http://www.electrosport.com/Images/fault_finding.pdf

I guess you've checked your connections, grounds etc.

It almost sounds like a carb problem. Especially stalling while riding. But do like Fergy says, and run through the fault finding chart.

Since you have jumped it from your truck, I'm assuming you're having trouble getting it to turn over sometimes and running your battery down. Since you talked about checking your r/r, I assumed we were talking electrical issues.

The problem seems to be electrical. I was having some carb problems a little while ago. Lots of back firing and stuff. But I cleaned the air filters and that's all better now.

I'll try the flow chart and double check my connections.

Is there a chance it could be the solenoid? I used to have a '76 mustang and the bike is making the same kind of clicking noise that the stang did when it's solenoid was bad.

Thanks,
Tex

i know this is sound like a  but when was your last plug change? Carb problems can foul up a plug in no time and that would explain some of your symptoms.

I've never changed the plugs. When I cleaned the air filters I did pull the plugs and clean them, but I didn't regap 'em. How often should they be changed? The bike is a '97. I bought her with ~13K and she's up to somewhere between 40 and 50K now.

Holy mackeral ! I know I've changed my plugs once, and I've got 17K on mine.

you know, in cars they are normally good for about 12k miles before they start losing performance. if your at 50k with the original plugs, i'd say replace them. I change my plugs out every 8k miles on my bike (no i dont use and irridium, uranium or plutonium with gold trim plugs, just plane old joe autolites). the reason for this is cause a hp or 2 loss is huge when the bike only has 55. for every hp lost its losing 1% of its power.

Jeez, with that kind of math you'll have trouble with your stator rewind! I think it's more like 2%!

Wow, those might be the original plugs. Weather or not it solves the problem, I'd still change them.

my bad.... i guess your right. I was in a hurry at work. I better double check all my math on my stator or else i may have a nice MIG welder on my bike :wow:

Thanks guys, I'll change the plugs next chance I get. Looks like it'll be later un August though. Just too much to do to play with the bike right now.
