I seen in the paper of a 1985 VN750 garage kept 11k miles. Supposed to be in good condition. They are asking $2500 for it. What do you think?

Thanks

Way too much. Garage queen that has sat way more than ridden. I wouldn't go more than 1500. I only paid 2800 for an 01 with 7300 miles.

Isn't 85 the VN700? check and see if the engine is black or silver

I would say it depends on the condition. 11,000 isn't too few miles and if all the proper maint. was done on it, it should be ok. Having spent the majority of it's time in a garage, the wiring should be ok and that is one major thing. That being said, it's going to have issues, so judge accordingly.

Btw when I say "too few miles"...as a counter example...I was reading the classifieds the other day and came across an add that read something like "76 Ferrari 308GT4, 1100 original miles, always garaged". 1100 miles in 28 years? The guy drive it 3 or 4 times a year...barely enough to get the thing warmed up. Not good.

I paid $2,500 for my bike. It is a 1994 and had 10,300 miles on it at the time. It was in immaculate condition, always garage kept, detailed before it was parked, not a speckle of rust on it. I didn't have to do anything but replace the speedo cable since I got it. It was completely stock other than the luggage rack. The tires are good... Dunlops, and he gave me a brand new helmet still in the plastic, and a bike cover for it. I didn't have anything to compare to at the time because it was actually the first bike I liked enough to go and look at. I couldn't even test it myself because I'd never straddled a bike alone before, but I took along a friend who knows bikes fairly well and he looked it over, rode it and said..."Oh yeah! Get it" So......I did........and no regrets! I learned to ride less than three months ago, have put about 800 miles on "Surak" the windshield, saddlebags, some chrome tank and fender trim and he's running and looking like a million dollars to me!

dennsi,

You stole that thing! Man did you ever get a deal. I got a deal (not as sweet as yours though) too. I bought my '96 from the original owner for $3100 in '02. It was very clean and only had 3,400 miles on it. It did need a regulator but I was happy that I found one locally in the color I wanted and it had the Kaw tall backrest, luggage rack and a small Nat Cycle shield. Most importantly my scoot runs great and gets good MPG.

Well I am happy there are still some bargains out there. I just havent found any myself LOL. I did bring home the bike, but not for 2500, and it was indeed the VN700. good eyes there UncleGomer! I didnt know the 750 was made later.

I rode the bike. did notice timing chain occasional clatter. He said he never heartd that before (hoping he is straight about that and I just caught it) It was running fairly well for a garadge Queen. I anticipate possible carb work but seeing what the seafoam will do first.

Bike was dirty. but if you rubbed it it looked pretty good under there. Story was in storage fully drained for Most of bikes life due to orig. owner getting MS and couldnt ride. then 2nd owner had it worked on, I suppose that is where the new timing chain tensioner came from, but it was defective, as I found,

I had to break it down and bend the spring where it wouldnt go around the barrel and release the tension! after that, no more clatter. Ideling on one cylender, adjusted carb balance screw annd think it is running on both now ok. But bought as a project bike, Knowing it needs some major TLC.

I kept trying to leave and the guy talked me into buying it, you might say, by actually accepting the price I said I heard a bike like that might be worth, whitch was 1500. So long as the motor doesnt fall apart, maybe I did ok. Wife said she really likes it and I hope it is fully running for KY lake.

On the bright side it does have recently installed Dunlop tires on it, but they have the front on right the way the tread looks, but- well wrong according to the arrow- can yoiu just flip the front wheel over, or just leave the tire that way?

And the stator is fully functional and starting up well, hope to keep it that way too.

Brakes are working perfectly.

Seat has just been re-done too. but may want to replace it with stock seat off newer model or something.

What is the difference between the 700 and the 750, what parts do not interchange?

Advise Please!

Beavis- see you at KY lake!

Congrats on your purchase... I think you got a good deal.

The 700 was only made that one year (still under the Harley Protection Act penalizing bikes over 700 cc). The 750 started the next year and continues to today.

I anticipate possible carb work but seeing what the seafoam will do first. At the local (non-chain) parts store where I get my SeaFoam now, they agree Sea Foam is great, especially as preventative maintenance. They said if you are having problems (haven't been using SF), they had a product called Four Way (right next to SF on the shelf; don't know if it's the same manufacturer) that is better for a good clean out

Seat has just been re-done too. What did they do to the seat?

And the stator is fully functional and starting up well, hope to keep it that way too. If it doesn't have one, get a Maint Free battery right away anyway!!

What is the difference between the 700 and the 750, what parts do not interchange?AFAIK, it's the same bike except for the engine size (and the 700 was painted black, unlike the 750's). I don't think there ware any changes between 85 and 86. Most parts are interchangeable with any year except they changed the brake fluid reservoir from square to round at some point. That will make a difference in what levers you can use. And the earlier models (I think including the 700) had self-cancelling turn signals - a nice feature. As a result I think the unit on the left grip is different (certainly different connections).

He said they said the foam was good, so it was just re-covered in black leather like vynel stuff. looks good, and is thick and taller than mine is, maybe my foam is matted down? anyways, thats all I know, no studding or anything fancy.

I don't think the 700's had the tuffed pillow top type seat. Least some of the ones I have seen had the diamond pattern stitching. Might be why the foam is taller.

your right, I need to find a stock 750 seat somewhere with the pillow top.
thanks

When I was checking with a local auto upholstery shop about my plans for my seat (Wait till you guys see it!!!), he pointed out that our seat covers just have a foam backing that's not really extra padding. He proposed a backing that is about ¼-inch foam padding and will make the seat far more comfortable. Wonder if your seller, when he recovered the old seat, did something similar?

No way I'd pay that much - garage kept or not. To sit so long is not good on any of the fluids. I'd even insist on a change of all of the fluids before even going on a test ride.

I checked the Kelly Blue Book for the value on mine and I got a good deal.
$1800
'94 with 14k miles
slipstreamer windshield
W&M small saddle bags
Kaw turnsignal relocation / saddlebag supports
HJC 3/4 helmet
SuperT T-Bag

for UncleGomer, I dont know if it has any added padding, from what he said second hand, nothing was done but a recover, but the padding is a good 2 inches thick i think, so does the old 85 stock seat have tall padding?

For everone else as well:

as for the fluids, I was told the bike was drained and stored, I assumed all fluids. I think they were all new, since it was ridden for the last 4 years, but stored previous to that for many years, maybe 15. except the brake fluid, whitch I dont know about but assumed it was old since it was red, they dont make colored brake fluid do they? so I replaced it. then I changed everything again, here is the list:

bike has brand new tires front and back, already on bike. Dunlop tires. front one is on backwards, as far as arrow indicates, but looking at tread, I would say that it is proper, lol. would you turn it around?

repalced:
brake fluid
engine oil 10w40 with stfilter
drive shaft grease
final drive gear oil

Mods:
added capacitor to regulator for stability
fused stator leads

Work Performed:
Dissasembled a carb for inspection, found it was already clean, but removed a tiny piece of trash from the needle seat (was flooding)

laymenly balanced the carbs (looked at butterflys and guessed)

set idle mixture screws (about 2.5 turns out aprox)

rebuilt the NEW timing tensioner that was replaced recently-(possibly installed improperly) spring had spun around barrel apparently.

done all this in about 12 hours-whew, I was exhausted!!!
getting them carbs off the bike is a..................
anyway, so far so good,

Anybody have the horsepower of the VN700?

just curious how much faster the 750 should be?

future plans include H-pipe degoating and maint free bty.

may try to make my own degoat kit, not sure.

comments suggestions?

No real suggestions on things you asked for one on, just wanted to say thanks for the update and I am sure you will have tip-top soon.

I have a spreadsheet where I have tracked every (almost) ebay sale of a vn750 and no sale (reserve not met) since sept of '03. If anyone is interested in a copy and can read a microsoft excel file, let me know, I can email you the latest version. It gets updated several times a week, and currently has over 200 entries.

Chris,

I wonder if this is something that could be put into XML and placed on the 750.com website?
