VoIP Doc 07-29-2011, 06:54 PM Didn't want to hijack the Newbie thread......
I don't often get on a soap box ranting, but this needs to be said. It is under Suggestions / Tech Support because I think we can "Make the site better." as describe under the heading.
We often say "You can't fix stupid." Well, keeping members in the list just for the sake of numbers is stupid and it CAN be fixed!
These are members??

Dwayn,
I know you have only been around a short time, so you're not responsible, but I challenge you to provide a count of the number of members who NEVER even logged in after registering, forget even posting! Well over 5700 members never posted prior to Jan 1 2010. That number jumps to 6000 + if the date is Jan 1 2011.
At the very least, can someone explain why we keep the list intact??
Come on. Let's make this a forum for active members
Rant over. Stepping off soap box now. :smiley_th
Definitely agree with you!
When the forum changed owners I thought they would never be around to solve anything on the forum. So far, they've just been proving me right :-/
Dianna is around here and I respect the support she gives to this forum but obviously we still need the forum admin. But he's not easy to get a hold of.
Dianna 07-30-2011, 09:56 AM I did some pruning and deleted any member with no activity in the last 2 years (730 days) and 0 posts (Spammers posts have been deleted so their count is 0)
New count of members is..... Members: 6,164

Great start Dianna!! Do you think this fixes the registering issue in other thread???
This is simply a great forum! :smiley_th
Dianna 07-30-2011, 11:08 AM Not sure it fixes the registration issue unless there was a limit on members. After a few more swipes at the pruning I'll try a test registration and see if I still get the 500 server error.
500 Internal Server Error
A generic error message, given when no more specific message is suitable.
The server failed to fulfill an apparently valid request.
Response status codes beginning with the digit "5" indicate cases in which the server is aware that it has encountered an error or is otherwise incapable of performing the request. Except when responding to a HEAD request, the server should include an entity containing an explanation of the error situation, and indicate whether it is a temporary or permanent condition. Likewise, user agents should display any included entity to the user. These response codes are applicable to any request method.
These usually show up when an action is directed to a dead end or a bad or non-existent action.
I'm still digging.
Dianna 07-30-2011, 11:28 AM Just tried the registration again and when I get to
http://www.vn750.com/forum/register.php?do=addmember
I get
The website cannot display the page
HTTP 500

昑he website has a programming error.
fergy 07-30-2011, 02:17 PM It is comforting to know that you are looking into it Dianna! Thanks for everything you do for all of us Vulcaneers.
Vulcan2000 07-30-2011, 06:51 PM I originally posted this under the earlier thread for newbies but I will transfer it here.

This is very interesting after reading Posts 21, 22, and 23 of a thread under News and Announcements labeled 9000 Members from October 2010. It seems this potential issue was brought up then and was never fully investigated. I wonder what the true membership total is today with a more realistic measurement of activity within one year rather than two. There are so many possible reasons that a high membership number would be pleasing to those owning this forum. I only hope this was truely a simple oversight rather than allowed for commercial gain. IMHO this forum has produced too much positive for a large number of Vulcan enthusiasts to be involved in a commercialized sham. 4000 members were dropped using the two year activity criteria. How many would be dropped using a one year activity criteria? Just something to ponder and my wondering out loud.
shnickelfritz 07-31-2011, 11:15 AM This website is a commercial endevour funded by the ads, which are targeted to motorcyclists. Since I have paid nothing to use this site I have No assumed expectation that a non-volunteer administrator will take the time out of his life to read my message, and respond to it. He is Not obligated to do so. Maybe this site is not self sustaining or is in the red, and does not warrant their attention. Of course it is to their commercial advantage to provide a high figure for the number of "members" to their clients, the advertisers. This is not a club. However, we "users" should all appreciate it's existence on a daily basis, and realize that it could vanish at any time.
Dianna 07-31-2011, 11:57 AM In answer to the question, how many more have 0 posts in the last year.. 836
So..
Members: 5,698
- inactive 836
would bring us to 4,862 that have at least posted something in the last year.
However, I hesitate to delete the 836 because many use this as a reference and don't have a need to post unless a problem comes up that we haven't addressed before.
The spammers have been removed from our ranks however, and they do remain on the banned list.

You're new so you may not be aware the site was recently acquired from a private owner when it was funded solely on contributions from members as indicated by green highlighted names/handles. Prior to that, the site was ad free. To Dianna's credit, she just spent her weekend "pruning" dead wood....that is focused "attention" in my book. As arguably the best motorcycle forum on the planet, I doubt it will vanish anytime soon. Hardly a week goes by "users" don't express their gratitude for information provided by the active members. :smiley_th

GREAT JOB Dianna....I'm sure you had better things to do with your weekend...I believe I speak for 4862 active members...THANK YOU!
km60155 07-31-2011, 12:42 PM According to my member search at:
http://www.vn750.com/forum/memberlist.php?do=search
There are only 2098 members that have made their last post since "2009-07-31 00:00:00" (in the last 2 years)
Maybe the search function is inaccurate, but this number is a lot less than the numbers that others are suggesting. For example.....
would bring us to 4,862 that have at least posted something in the last year.
