Met my biking buddies in Stonewall at a dive motel Friday night. We headed out Sat. morning down 87 to Comfort for breakfast. It was cool and foggy, misting, but we figured it would burn off quick enough. From Comfort we went on to Centerpoint, then Bandera and on to Utopia. The farther we rode, the better the scenery got, and more up and down and twisty the roads. Hundreds of bikers on the roads and at every gas station, there were a hundred bikes. From Utopia, we headed for Leakey and there we stopped at the Frio Canyon Bike Stop and hung out for a few hours. There were BBQ stands set up and hundreds of bikers, and bikes everywhere to sniff on. Looked like a biker rally. The BBQ was great and we got to talk to fellow bikers from all over the country. From there we took 337, one of the most scenic roads in Texas, and a favorite biker ride, with tons of twisties and hills. This area is nicknamed the "Swiss Alps of Texas" and the views are awesome. Then we followed 335 North along the Nueces River with continuous elevation changes and twists and turns, spectacular scenery and views of the river. Highway 41 wasn't much scenery wise, but it got us to 336 where we turned South through some of the same kind of terrain that 337 and 335 had, through countless ranches and cattleguards, along the Rio Frio, for a most memorable ride. This brought us back into Leakey where we headed towards Medina on 337 and a few more turns through the back roads brought us into Kerrville where we parked it for the night.
Then Sunday we headed back toward Fredericksburg, and did the Willow City Loop, about 18 miles of private ranch land road where the twists and turns and elevation changes, and views are only second to the 33's (335, 336 and 337). A stop by Enchanted Rock for stocking up on more water and a brief rest in the shade and we were off for Luckenbach. As usual, there were gobs of bikers relaxing around the old town, and several musicians sitting around singing and playing guitars. We sat around for a while and rested before heading back home. It was sad to park the bike but the AC felt pretty good and my sweetie and puppy were awful glad to see me home.
My Vulcan rode and handled the roads like a dream. It had all the power I wanted and was light and nimble around the sharp turns. My ass would like a more comfortable seat, but the rest of me was pretty stoked about it all!
It was such an incredible ride, I can't wait to go again.
