: I Was Run Off The Road Today.
kanuck69 05-09-2010, 03:19 PM Hey all. I just thought I'd share my events today. My 13 year old daughter & myself were ran off the road today. We were headed northbound on st rt 60 just south of warsaw (ohio) Traveling around 60mph. Beautiful day. Nice & cool but sunny & warm. Perfect weather to me. I can wear gear & be comfortable. So as luck would have it, we were approaching a road entering from the left that had plenty of visibility in our direction. A car came to a stop at that stop sign & apparently didn't see us. He proceeded to pull out in front of us. I didn't have time to stop little oun slowdown. The quick discission was to veer right or hit him. I chose veer right. Unfortunatly the fairly steep bank didn't like my bike riding on it & decided to throw us. As the bike was loosing it I look to my left, I'm right beside the F'n guy. We proceed to slide on the left side of the bike for prpbrbly a good 30 ft. Thank god for the hard bags I JUST installed. They looked really nice with thr fresh paint job. lol Alittle scratchy now. But, they saved us from being really hurt. My daughters one foot hurts a bit & I have some scratch marks on a leg & maybe some bruising tommorrow. But we walked away. That was a blessing. The bike can be fixed. Maybe. Depends on what the insurance company ends up doing. The bike doesn't look to bad, but the mount for the tank on the left side cracked & started pouring gas. No fire, very good thing. I think she'll need a new tank. The bags are paintable but the fairing had a chunk busted out. I don't think any mechanical damage has been done. But honestly. I really don't want to look at it right now. I'm just glad to be ok. In no way am I going to stop riding, but I'm pretty sure I'm going to miss the poker run cuming up. lol Any way all. I'm glad to be here to talk about it & very luck to not be seriously hurt.
ohio_redneck75 05-09-2010, 03:32 PM wow man glad you are ok. did the car stop to help or just drive away?
OlHossCanada 05-09-2010, 05:11 PM Wow, that was close. Glad no one was hurt any worse than you were.
If I understand you correctly, you had the right of way at a four way intersection (no stop sign facing you), and the other guy stopped, then pulled out in front of you. A classic ***SMIDSY*** move.
SMIDSY - "Sorry Mate I Didn`t See You"
Kanuck, Here is a way to prevent a future repeat of this crash. Note what he says about motorcycle "camouflage" and "looming."
SIAM - "SMIDSY Idendification and Avoidance Manoever", ie. weaving from side to side in your lane, to create lateral movement to avoid the camouflage and looming effects, which are explained in the video.

Glad that you and your daughter are not seriously hurt. Apparently, you made the right
spear of the moment choice.
bj31702 05-09-2010, 05:50 PM Happy to hear you guys came out it it fairly well. Hurry up and get it fixed :)
kanuck69 05-09-2010, 05:54 PM I can't believe I didn't mention this part. He drove away. To clarify the other. It was not a 4way stop at all. It was a road ending onto the road I was traveling. I had No stop. I totally saw him & was watching him. When he stopped, he sat for a moment then started to go & abruptly stopped. I thought he had seen me at that point. It was then pulling out in front of me that caught me off guard. Oh well. It was a good day for living.
Gemguy 05-09-2010, 06:50 PM hey Jason glad that you and your daughter are all right. I put the air horn on my bike to get attention at times like that but as I found out, they either have the radio too loud or they're on the phone or they're texting cause they don't hear it anyway. I had one come across 3 lanes to casually pull in front of me with my horn blaring. My wheels locked up and I was doing the twist with the bike thought for sure after I hit the car I would meet the idiot. Fortunately I managed to steer right and missed by inches also fortunately no one was in the lane next to me to run me over.
Glad you're safe man. Stay well. Much easier to fix the bike than to fix your bod.

Ccspinner 05-09-2010, 07:28 PM Good to hear you are doing good and no one got hurt.
Bikes can be fixed, that is the easy part, good driving.
ruger 05-09-2010, 08:06 PM wow! I am so glad that both of you are (for the most part) alright. good thing you had your gear on!
don't worry about the poker run, there is always next year.
Ron_G 05-09-2010, 08:34 PM Another good advertisement for ATGATT.
Now go find the Jerk and give him what fer!

cglennon 05-09-2010, 10:53 PM YIKES! Good to hear that no one was seriously hurt.
denny6006 05-09-2010, 11:29 PM Thankful you and your daughter are alright and hope you can fix your bike.
flitecontrol 05-09-2010, 11:46 PM Glad you both are okay. Sounds like the jerk was under the influence; stop, go, stop, go, cause an accident, but keep going so the cops don't catch him and realize he's driving without a license because of a previous DUI.
KIMMERLING 05-10-2010, 02:24 AM Whew. I am glad you and your daughter made it. Don't let this get you down. Stay focused and get out there on some type of bike asap. Even if its a bicycle. Good job veering and putting the bags on prior.
Fire Ant 05-10-2010, 08:28 AM Whenever I'm approaching a roadway from either side with someone sitting there, and I'm not convinced that they're paying attention, I'll start doing the weaving back and forth thing just because the human eye is attracted to motion.
Glad that you and your daughter are both ok!!

BMan23777 05-10-2010, 08:44 AM Glad to hear you two are ok Jason!!!
hyperbuzzin 05-10-2010, 08:45 AM Sounds like a little too close of a close call!! It's dipsticks like that that give cagers a bad name!!
But, as it's been said, glad the two of you are mostly unharmed and hope things go well with the bike being repaired.
And to the unattentive dipstick driver.... let's hope he runs outta gas, as his tires go flat, just after his spark plugs pop outta the engine because his driveshaft fell off!! :smiley_th
LibertyPilot 05-10-2010, 09:19 AM Glad you're ok Jason, close one. Dude didn't even have the decency to stop!? Class act there.
I was stopped at a red light over the weekend. There was an escalade sitting at the same light facing me. The light turns green, he stays still. I assume he's waving me on, I can't see because his glass is tinted. I start to make my left and he suddenly guns it! I let the clutch out full and throttle for my life - just missed me. I swear he was trying to kill me. He probably wasn't paying attention, looked up all of a sudden, saw the light was green and punched it.
Stay safe out there...
93VN750 05-10-2010, 12:19 PM wow man glad you are ok. did the car stop to help or just drive away?
My thoughts exactly.

VN750Rider/Jerry 05-11-2010, 08:03 PM I've been run off the road many times during the past 35 years, a few times intentionally. Fortunately no injuries and no crashes. Some idiot was convicted of first degree murder for running over and killing a bicyclist here about a year ago. He said he did it in a fit of rage, but believed bicycles had no business on the road, and expressed no remorse. Many cagers feel the same way about motorcycles, and they can be an easy target for road rage. Jerry.
jthill524 05-12-2010, 04:46 AM First Off I'm glad You and Your Daughter is Not hurt Worst then You Were.
But, I have to step in Here and say Something. I'm 54 Yrs Old. I've been riding Bikes on and off since I was 16 And (Knock on Wood) I've Never been in a Motorcycle wreck (with or without a Car) or Run off the Road.
If I had been in that Situation when I first saw the Car I would of been Slowing down or Power Braking so by the time I got to the car I would of been under 25 mph. Specially with somebody on the back.
Now Don't get me wrong I know there are times where things can't be avoided But us Motorcyclists can't keep the Throttle Down while heading toward a Car that Most likely will pull out in front of us, then Complain when they do.
And your not the only one I've seen a few more on here that sounds like Things could of been Avoided if they would of took some kind of action Sooner, then waiting until when they were in the thick of things
When We see them & are far enough away to Safely slow down then we need to do it. Also Slowing down will give them enough time to pull out get out of our way.
When I ride I always ride by 3 simple rules:
1. This Bike can & Will turn on Me either Hurt Me or Kill Me -- So Don't Let it.
2. Don't start too or Put Myself into any Dangerous Situations -- Like Weaving through Traffic.
3. All other Drivers are Idiots, They're Not Watching Out for You -- So Watch out for Them.

The bike is not the bad guy, it is a machine under your control. Only you can make it "turn on you" as it lacks the ability to think on its own.

jthill524 05-12-2010, 05:10 PM Well That's close but not quite there. Number one was from the the Experiences I had growing up. Every & I mean EVERY Biker I knew, As soon as He thought He had Complete Control over His Bike, Is when He got Hurt on it.
You know Showing Off like riding without Hands, Feet on the handlebars, Standing on the Bike, Racing, Trying to ride Wheelies, You know just stuff you wouldn't try if you was Still Scared of the the Bike and had respect for it.
So Everytime I Ride, I Ride with Fear & Respect for the Bike Because I have seen How Quick You can Go from Riding the Bike to the Bike Riding You.
Fixed it for you.

Knifemaker 05-12-2010, 06:48 PM Well, how about this then:
1. Motorcycles are very dangerous forms of transportation. small errors at anytime can bring catostraphic results. Be carefull at all times.
;)
KM
ps. but wheelies are fun............
jthill524 05-12-2010, 08:22 PM That Could Work..........Or as Red would say on the 70's Show.
"If Your A Dumb-A$$ Don't Ride a Motorcycle, The Aftermath Won't Be as Pleasant as Just a Foot Up Your ..."
Fixed it for you.

jimkonst 05-12-2010, 08:33 PM Get back on a bike, and get your daughter back on, if possible. You know what the cager did wrong, you are probably figuring out what you did wrong. It's all good.
Ride on.
skalding 05-12-2010, 11:02 PM I'm sorry to hear about the accident - what a jerk!
kanuck69 05-13-2010, 09:57 AM If I had been in that Situation when I first saw the Car I would of been Slowing down or Power Braking so by the time I got to the car I would of been under 25 mph. Specially with somebody on the back.
Are trying to tell me that traveling on a 55mph road you slow down to 25 everytime you see a car stoped at a stop sign? Sorry, I'm call'b Bull S#!^. Who does that!?
No offence intended but come on.

I just about did that my first day back in the saddle. Every car I saw stopped on the side road I visualized pulling out in front of me and I slowed down. I very quickly got a tail of commuters eager to pass me. Not a good thing either.
jimkonst 05-13-2010, 03:52 PM I would not normally slow down, but I DO leave my headlight on low so that I can light up in situations that make me nervous. Flashing is not a good idea, but turning on the brights and leaving them on has good results.

I do.
...........that's why some of us never crash and others do............ raise your hand if you don't slow down AND have downed your bike on the road... ;) ;)
OK, I might not slow down to 25 from 55, but likely would slow to at least 35-40 and move as far away from the car as the road would let me.
You might get some commuters on your tail for slowing down, but once past the possible danger your bike can quickly accellerate ahead of them.
(I actually do this to tailgaters....I just keep slowing down until they are just crawling behind me and then take off like a rocket. Usually the 2nd time you do this they get the point.)

kanuck69 05-13-2010, 05:18 PM Well then, I stand corrected. =)
