Just finishing up rebuilding a laid down 2001 I bought last fall. Went for a test rideand it doesn't want to shift from 1st to 2nd without a lot of wiggling of the shifter. Circuclips are in plce on shaft. HERES the part that has me crazy!!!IT SHIFTS FINE WHEN UP ON CENTER STAND. Clutch is adjusted per clymer manual and feels fine when stopping or putting bike in gear. Clutch does not slip under load. Only problem is going from 1 to 2 all others are ok. ANY IDEAS???

Try only driving with the center stand down at all times.

When the bike was laid down did you have to replace the internal shift linkage?

Not to my knowledge, bought it on salvage title. External shaft appeared ok. Shaft was straight and undamaged. Pulled motor over winter and replaced clips and checked stator bought new shift pawl but old one was ok couldn't tell it from new one. When i had cover off linkage all seemed to move like it should. Bike only has 6k miles.

Was the shift drum set properly when you replaced the shift pawl. you may need to check the shift pawl.

Didn't change it.It was in new condition so i left it in. The no load shifting fine is whats making me craaaaaazy. In shop you can shift it any way you want, clutch, no clutch, no problem.

Did you split the case or just remove the stator cover?

Just had side covers off. Don't look forward to a case split. Might prefer a root canal w/o anesthesia!

When the bike was laid down was the shift shaft pushed inside the engine? Could you move the shaft in and out?

It moved about 1/2 inch in and out. So i replaced the clips with new ones.

I don' think you bent the internal linkage, but it could be. I am leaning more toward the shift pawl and or shift drum as the source. I have to deliver a scoot I repaired for a Member in the morning so I'm hittin the rack. I will get back in the afternoon. :beerchug:

Adding to what I already had posted. I got to take a little ride around the block today after the snow melted. Shifts pretty well from 1 to 2 if you keep rpms below 1300. Once it shifted all the way to 3rd instead of 2nd. Once you get past 2nd it shifts like a dream.

It may shift better after you get some miles on her, we'll see. :beerchug:
