: Another Spline Lube question

I finished breaking down my rear end. I have to take the rim in to get my new Metzeler mounted. YEAH.
I need to lube everything yet. The local Honda dealer is out of MOLY 60. I have this stuff that is brake caliper grease. It is made up of Molybdenum Disulfate, Graphite, and Teflon. This stuff is great on brakes, instead of anti-squeal spray or gel. I have put it on the back of brake pads and 10k miles later it is still there and thick. Its supposed to be designed to not melt or run off caliper assembiles under high temperatures.
So I guess my question is do you guys think it will work? If somebody could read off the ingrediants of MOLY60. The ones i said are just some of them. It has a bunch of other stuff too.

Also I have some high-res pic that I can't post on here of my splines. I want to know if they are ok. Or if I need to replace anything. Since they are such large files I am putting them on Facebook in the "Vulcan 750 Riders" group.
If you arent a member already you can join. It is a closed group. So it will hopefully be only 750 guys in there. or at least motorcycle people. No 12 yr olds.

Just because it has some Molybdenum Disulfate, doesn't mean it has enough to protect your splines. If you can check the percent somehow, it might be ok. You really don't need (and may not want) those other ingredients if you use a high moly material. Wouldn't use anything less than 60% moly ds. Loctite makes a moly paste that is over 70% moly and Guard Dog Lubricants has one that is 73-78% (can't remember). If you don't use the right lubricant, either the splines will suffer or you're gonna have to do it over with the right stuff, and soon.

ok that makes sense. do you think it can be too much moly? I cant find out what the % are. but i would still be curious what chemicals are in the honda moly 60

I really don't know if you can reach a point where there is too much moly. However, since a high moly content is desired, due to the nature of its lubricating properties, I would suspect that the more moly content, the better. Moly bonds to the metal surface of the splines and isn't pushed out or burned off like typical greases in the high temp, high pressure environment our drive shafts operate in.

Just checked my tube of Honda "Moly 60 Paste". It says "60% Molybdenum Disulfide Paste." I don't know what it means with regard to lubricating properties, but it is different chemically than the Moly Disulfate lube. The package also says "Use for driveshaft splines & other final drive components".

Good up to 750 degrees F for moving parts - 1500 degrees F for stationary parts.

Considering the risks, I would order it (Honda Moly 60) through the Honda dealer or on-line. In my opinion it's worth the wait.

If you have the name of the brake grease you used, see if you can find the MSDS sheet on it to compare to.
IMO, order the Moly60 and be sure you've got good stuff in there :smiley_th

FWIW, the products I mentioned also include motorcycle splines among the list of possible uses.

yeah i found stuff that had more info. it is only 20% moly at the most. maybe another shop will have some. otherwise i have to wait. at least its going get bad weather here again so i dont have to miss out completely.

found out what the worst sound is in the world. when you are sitting in your garage with your bike in pieces and you can hear bikes going by non-stop

My local Honda dealer sells the Moly 60 for $23 and change CAD or about $19 USD after deducting 20% exchange. I think you can find it on e-bay for $8-10 plus shipping. Check around for the best buy.

To cure riding envy, put some rock and roll on the car stereo in the garage and CRANK IT UP. The bikes will still be going by but you won`t hear them! LOL Good luck and I hope you get the 3D puzzle back together soon, with no left over parts.

yeah. i'll just have to wait. My other question is the spline in front that is in front of the u-joints. how can i get in there easily to get lube on that? or is spray white lithium good enuf for in there? or do i need to undo the swingarm? cuz i can pull the u-joint back a little but not all the way
