I bought my '86 VN750 back in August. The bike was in great condition with only about 4,300 miles on it. The only problem with it was that it was not run very often at all. I had some problems registering the bike and so it sat in my garage for a couple of months. I would often start the bike and just ride it around a little. The battery ultimately died on me so I purchased a new one. I was able to get it started again a couple of times, but it crapped out after a couple of seconds. Now whenever I try to start it up I just hear a loud ticking noise. Any ideas on what could be wrong?

If the bike has sat for a long period of time, the carbs are probably all gummed up. I had an old Honda 400 that had sat for about 4 years and when I finally started it, it ran just like your bike. I took the carbs all apart and cleaned everything in solvent and replaced the jets and gaskets and it ran great.
