Dear Ade,

It has to do with the orientation of the crankshaft. Any engine, be it a V-Twin, V-Four, or inline-Four, is considered to be “transverse” if its crankshaft lies perpendicular to the motorcycle’s wheels, i.e. across the frame, parallel to the axles. Most motorcycles have transversely mounted cranks, including all Harley-Davidson V-Twins, nearly all four-cylinder sportbikes like the Yamaha R1, Kawasaki ZX-10R, Aprilia RSV4, all Ducati V-Twins and V-Fours… including the Monster 797 pictured on the left, above.

Chain or belt drive to the bike’s rear wheel is simplest and lightest with this layout, and having the crankshaft spinning in the same plane as the rear wheel means power can be transferred through the gearbox and straight on into the drive chain and rear sprocket without making any power-sucking changes of direction.

If I could ask MO anything.. why do you overly clutter your forums with ads? Some of the clickbait b.s. in the footer is super questionable at times, too.

While I understand now that they're a "corporate sponsor" my question to them is if they have a #$%^ing clue as to what THIS website is about. Please stop with the ads on chain driven bikes or, like the above, transverse engines. This website is NOT about pleasing the broad, universe of motorcyclists and motorcycles. It is exclusively about the 750 Vulcan and the specifics of this breed of bike. I don't mind the occasional question a member has about another bike that they own. When I have a question about my Virago I'll probably ask the braintrust here about it. But the intent of THIS website was never, from day one, about the wonderful, all inclusive, wide, wide world of two wheels. This is one of the reasons I got torqued off a few months back about our beloved corporate sponsor's choice of useless, irrelevant, wasted threads. If they want to tune in more to the world of our specific bike then I would welcome the information. Frankly I doubt they could say anything more than what the members can come up with themselves. I highly dislike the thoughtless force-feeding of commercialism that sometimes cannot possibly even pertain to this target audience. Somehow I get the impression that sitting in some office somewhere in the commercial world of Motorcycle.com is some bloke that has a requirement to write "X" amount of threads per month and, because their legitimate large-scale audience is honestly wide-spread in their type bikes and interests, simply writes them for the masses and then sends to "ALL" of the websites they support, without thought as to just what those individual websites are even about. And I agree with thtanner about the onslaught of ads, especially the nonsense "footers" as he describes it. I try to ignore all the bogus junk but there is so much it takes my computer an exceptional amount of time to get everything loaded before I can interact with it at all. I do not see any of this changing, of course, except maybe for the worse. They're not listening. And if they are, I doubt anyone is receptive to filtering their input to this website to entries that would actually pertain to the 750 Vulcan. I'll hush now because this rubs my chromosones way, way the wrong way.

With "free" sites online, you have to expect ads, or at least an occasional "word from our sponsor"

Why didn't they talk about the Motoguzzi shown above? Do they think no one here knows crap about motorcycles?

And sorry Chris, I don't mind information on other bikes. I'd usually assume if you own a motorcycle you have some intrest in other models or brands. Not everything here has to be VN750 specific. (Like helmets, gear, luggage, etc.)

I'll remind you many here do not ride Vulcan 700/750s anymore....
So have a beer and relax

KM: I said that I don't mind others asking the occasional question or make comments about other type bikes. I also understand the generic stuff like helmets, bags, gear and so forth because they ARE universal in nature. But I remind you of the very name of this website: "Vn750.com". The name tends to give thought as to the specificity of information that will be found within. One of the best things about it, at least I think so, is that it IS specific to this bike, the bike I happen to ride for the time being. VROC, for example, is a farther ranging site that covers essentially all types of Vulcans. No doubt there are 750 riders in there also but you'd have to wade through the myriad threads about everything else to find something that affects the 750. If a person owns several type Vulcans then that is a good place for them. You yourself own several type bikes if I'm not mistaken and have mentioned in the past that you peruse through more than one website. It works for you. Cool. I, too, own a Virago and have interests in Triumph Thunderbirds and if I ever get one I'll also float around in whatever website trends more to that species. But for now I own a 750 and this is soooooooo nice to have a website available that caters 95+% to this bike. VROC doesn't work for me cause I prefer not to have to find the one-thread-in-twenty (if that) that applies to my concerns. This place is essentially a desktop shortcut to information. That, in and of itself, is a HUGE attraction to come here. If just for that reason alone, I resist the dilution of topics (beyond what I've already mentioned are cool) such as jumping over highways, etc that come from outside sources. Back to your opening comments: I do not mind a word from our sponsor. That being said, since this site is a type-specific site (primarily), I'm just saying that it would be nice if those words would be more attuned to the nature/culture/mission statement (or however one wants to think of it) of said type-specific site. Anyway, I'm not in the power structure, whatever that is, so I am not in a position to direct what ads or threads are printed. Everyone is free to agree or disagree with me. I have no issues with members that disagree whether they pay for the site or use it for free. There are limits to things people can say or the level of disagreements members can have here without getting banned, of course. Some civility must be maintained and my comments definitely fall into the safe side for that. I have expressed my opinions on the subject (for what its worth) and shall not comment further on it.
